Families Sue Ohio School After Four Bullied Teens Die by Their Own Hand

Sladjana Vidovic's body lay in an open casket, dressed in the sparkly pink dress she had planned to wear to the prom. Days earlier, she had tied one end of a rope around her neck and the other around a bed post before jumping out her bedroom window.

The 16-year-old's last words, scribbled in English and her native Croatian, told of her daily torment at Mentor High School, where students mocked her accent, taunted her with insults like "Slutty Jana" and threw food at her.

It was the fourth time in little more than two years that a bullied high school student in this small Cleveland suburb on Lake Erie died at his or her own hand — three suicides, one overdose of antidepressants. One was bullied for being gay, another for having a learning disability, another for being a boy who happened to like wearing pink.

Now two families — including the Vidovics — are suing the school district, claiming their children were bullied to death and the school did nothing to stop it. The lawsuits come after a national spate of high-profile suicides by gay teens and others, and during a time of national soul-searching about what can be done to stop it.

This is absolutely horrible that anyone would take their own life, but there is a simple solution to what is happening in the schools... Parents can start parenting again. Parents are too scared to discipline their kids now a days. It's not the schools fault to me. Lessons start at home.

Poor girl. They should go after the kids who bullied her. This is above and beyond heartless. These kids were evil.

I have always taught my children charity. They have been taught to never point out someone’s differences; they are to befriend the friendless, and to always be kind.

I told my oldest son that I NEVER want to hear of him ever being unkind to anyone.

At a very young age, he was only allowed to watch programs like Davey and Goliath, Vegetales, etc. Some secular cartoons are allowed only if they teach something. I have really seen the fruits of this, my children are very kind to others.

Thank God!

Parents do need to start parenting but I dont think thats this girls issue.

Parents are now taught they need to be their kids friends and not parents. All part of the socialist agenda.

Are you people kidding me?

Teach these crybabies to PUNCH!

Break a bully’s nose and we’ll go on the two weeks vacation!

Then I’ll homeschool you and you can give the example at you college commencement speech on why you are such an incredible person today and how you will fix this world.

We’ve created generations of wimpy bologna sticks that kill themseleves before they fight for life. How in the heck do you win a war with such people who will jump out of a building sooner than fight to the death for what is right?

Teach them to fight - there are only respectful words in an open carry town. Bring back open carry - your fists!

Exactly correct. It is the parents fault. They should have taught their kid to appreciate her heritage and accent. How to ignore these bullies. How to throw food back at them, accurately. We are raising a generation of timid mamby pambies. Teach her how to kick boys in the balls and how to pull girls hair. Too harsh? promoting violence? How violent was the act of putting a noose around her neck and jumping out the window? I feel bad for this child that she didn't have better parents.

I think you misunderstood my post. I have no problem with my child defending himself. He is to never to pick on someone/bullying. Thats all I meant.

If someone bullied my son, and he punched them in the nose, I’d give him a high five. (Hopefully I won’t be sued).

My daughter, who is an intelligent, strong and mechanically inclined young woman, was being picked on middle school. A clique of twits was calling her a lesbian, saying she was pregnant, etc.

One of the young women involved was a former friend and came up to the table where my daughter was sitting with her friends at lunch and in a loud voice asked my daughter if she was a lesbian. My daughter jumped up on the table and shouted, “Why Emily, I didn’t know you liked girls. You’re not my type, but I’m sure we can find you a date for homecoming!”

I got a call from the VP and told him that we had filed 6 complaints in the last two years about this particular girl bullying my daughter and the last time we came in, he told my daughter that she would just have to deal with it. I said, “She has now dealt with it as you told her to. If you don’t like how she dealt with it, you should have been more specific or dealt with it yourself.”

The bullying stopped and I didn’t hear anymore from the VP.

They should be suing the bullies parents. A civil suit against them might open some eyes as to the REAL problem.

God Bless you! That’s the way I feel. My son told me that there was a kid picking on him at recess. I told him that there are times when you have to fight back. He did, and amazingly he only got detention for it. I took him out to dinner. That bully has also stopped picking on my son.

I raised my sons the same way, and I was raised that way. They have always been kind and repectful. It has to be taught; it doesn’t come naturally.

Many parents today do not teach their children even the most basic of manners. It’s very sad that I am now so impressed when a child in some public place shows respect to me. At one time, such behavior was quite commonplace.

And teachers should be able to start paddling again. When I was in school and got spanked by the teacher I got a butt whipping when I got home. And the one at school was nothing compared to what I got at home. Today my mother would be charged with child abuse.

Discipline your child and go to jail. In many places all it takes is stern words. The UN Rights Of The Child treaty is being implemented all over the country without any ratification. It is just being done.

Some people here need to read the article. I know some things this school can do to stop suicides:

1. Do away with the gay and lesbian club.

2. Don’t provide seats for the pet lemur of some kid to sit in class with him.

That might well have prevented two of these suicides.

The lefty PC adults pretend odd ball behavior is normal and some poor kids believe them publically do thing that get them teased unmercifully.

The most recent the girl was no longer in school. So it is a stretch to say she killed herself because of what she faced every day.

Amen!! My Mom and Dad were the same as yours! Get it at school and get more at home. Teachers had the authority to take control of the classroom and if you still didn't act right the Principal had the Board of Education in his office and had permission to use it.

And yet is this what we do if badly treated at work?

Suppose someone threw food at you in the company lunchroom? They would be immediately dismissed. Her teasers should have been expelled.

Suppose someone called you a slut in the corporate halls? They would be fired, immediately. Yet kids are supposed to put up with this, or learn to hit and throw food themselves.

IF the administration won’t kick out the bullies, then the parents should withdraw their bullied kids.

You and I would not continue going to work while being assaulted. And we are adults. Our bosses should fire whoever throws food at us. But if they don’t we quit. And our kids should be allowed to quit, too, not forced into that hideous environment every day.
