If you live in the Bay Area, chances are youre familiar with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Chances are youve even attended at least once over its 10 years running. Its hard to disregard a massive, three-day festival thats six-stages large and hundreds of thousands of attendees deep with a star-stacked lineup that takes place out in the emerald expanse of the Golden Gate Park every first weekend of Octoberthe sunniest, warmest time of the year in San Francisco. This coming weekend, Hardly Strictly is poised to throw what could be the biggest and best year yet with a staggering lineup that includes artists like Patti Smith, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Jonathan Richman, Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, Conor Oberst, Bonnie Prince Billy, Jenny and Johnny, Doc Watson, Hot Tuna, the Avett Brothers, Randy Newman, Joan Baez, MC Hammer, Jon Langford
hardly strictly all bluegrass. Emmylou Harris, the festivals reigning matron who has played every year since its inception, performs to the sunset crowd on Sunday evening. And the festival is entirely, absolutely, free.

Yours truly got to see the following acts:
Kelly Willis
Jon Langford and Skull Orchard
Carolina Chocolate Drops
Joan Baez
Richard Thompson (amazing set)
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (amazing set)
Lucero
Martin Sexton (never heard of this guy before--what an amazing performer)
Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women
Patti Smith (my least favorite. She sounded okay, but too much "we can still save the planet"-type sloganeering between songs. Reminded me of why I never like her as an artist)
James McMurtry
Flatlanders
Allison Moorer and Shelby Lynne
Umphrey's McGee (Never heard of these guys. They sounded like King Crimson, Yes and the Police all rolled into one).
It was an great weekend of music.
Screw them. Loads of liberal “talent” that hates conservatives and loves Obama. Anti-Americana.
Yeah, Rchard Thompson, who I see next week, was there with the Ferrington.
Allison Moorer. Steve Earle’s 7th or 8th wife...
Earle wasn’t there this year? There WAS a famous video of him on stage, Urging the crowd to give the finger to the “F&(*)ING Blue Angels”, as they practiced a show overhead. Youtube pulled the clip, because he was swearing, but also because some of the comments were pretty angry. (Mine included!)
Giving the finger to the Blue Angels. What scum. Elvis Costello is another leftist jerks. His wife as a jazz piano singer is incredibly overrated. I watched a few minutes of her live in Brazil and it su*ked. She sexes it up but she cannot sing.
Joan Baez is one of the original 60s communists in the music business.
No it isn't. There may be no cost to attend, but it is most assuredly not 'free'.

Whatever.
Thank you for so succinctly summing up the cause of nearly all of the problems we face today. Well done.
Politics has not permeated every aspect of my life. I am able to enjoy stuff.
Actually it has whether you want to see it or not.
I am able to enjoy stuff.
Especially when someone else is paying for it. Now in this instance it was done voluntarily. But the point still stands. Someone else paid for your good time.

Saw Umphrey’s McGee at Red Rocks on July 4th. Not really my style, I was there for Galactic, but they are amazingly talented.
Looked like a very good lineup at the festival.
Lighten up Francis. You don’t like any kind of entertainment. We get it. You post something similar within the first ten posts on practically any entertainment related thread. It is understood how you feel.
I have a CD and record collection. I no longer play any Costello records nor XTC or Blur records as they are libtards. Springsteen always sucked.
Joan Baez - give me an effing break. She went out with slimy Jerry Brown. She is scum. I bet you like wonderful Pete Seeger aka friend of Joe Stalin.
Jonathan Richman also blows. I had a friend who liked him and his band the Modern Lovers. Lame.
