Big defeat for Woods, Euros surge to Ryder lead

By PAUL NEWBERRY (AP) – 35 minutes ago

NEWPORT, Wales — What a day for Europe! The home team nearly pulled off a clean sweep Sunday, taking a huge step toward reclaiming the Ryder Cup with a performance that wiped out Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and the rest of America's stars.

The Ryder Cup will be finishing on a Monday for the first time, and it has all the makings of a huge European celebration at soggy Celtic Manor.

Captain Colin Montgomerie's squad kept the scoreboard bathed in blue all day. When it was over, Woods had the worst loss of his Cup career, Mickelson was the losingest U.S. player ever and the defending champs faced a daunting 9 1/2-6 1/2 deficit heading into singles play.

Two American players - Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson have ZERO points. Every European player has scored at least 1/2 point. At Brookline in 1999 the US came back from a 4 point deficit on the final day. But that year the Euros had several rookies that had not played prior to the singles. Because of the format change this year (due to rain) every player has played at least twice. I'd say advantage Euros if Tiger and Phil can't get in a groove tomorrow.

No the worse thing for Woods was that day he drove out of his driveway with his wife chasing him with a golf club.

Not looking good! If I had been Pavin I would have not played Tiger in anything except singles. He has been way too wild with both his drives and irons.

I doubt that this deficit can be overcome, but singles do seem to be our strong point...maybe.

Singles line up is out. Woods and Mickelson buried. Not sure why Dustin Johnson is 4th out when he's done squat so far. Strange.

Lee Westwood v Steve Strickera
Rory McIlroy v Stewart Cink
Luke Donald v Jim Furyk
Martin Kaymer v Dustin Johnson
Ian Poulter v Matt Kuchar
Ross Fisher v Jeff Overton
Miguel Angel Jimenez v Bubba Watson
Francesco Molinari v Tiger Woods
Edoardo Molinari v Rickie Fowler
Peter Hanson v Phil Mickelson
Padraig Harrington v Zach Johnson
Graeme McDowell v Hunter Mahan

because of the rain there were format changes to get all the matches in so no one was able to sit out.

Why would Pavin put Woods on the team?

Did Nike buy Woods spot on the team?

Actually, it was shortened as I understood it. They could have always left Woods out of alternate shot which would put undue pressure on his partner (hard to recover from rough, sand, and water).

Phil is playing like crap but Woods is being carried by Steve Stricker. Woods was a terrible choice by idiot Corey Pavin. If it wasn’t for Stewart Cink and the Euros playing badly - the U.S. would be getting blown out.

Pavin’s idiot wife has the team in lilac colored sweaters.
Maybe lilac is a nice color in vietnam but green or blue would have looked much nicer. Pink would have looked nicer than lilac.

Pavin’s wife should go back to posing nude (she ain’t that great looking) for golf magazines instead of “designing” clothes and raingear.

Tim Finchem the head of the PGA probably said he needed to be on the tesm. He sucks. The same Finchem/PGA that looks the other way with a “certain” player’s HGH and steroid use.

The only thing worse is the hideous clothes Mrs. Pavin’s, aka the co-captainess, “designed.” She should stick to posing nude in gold magazines.

Yes, Pavin and wife have made many errors...(Probably will cost him any chance for another Ryder Cup)...

As to the singles, it is good that Woods and Mickelson are somewhere in the middle - at least they have a chance against little knowns. Both are playing poorly.

This was a year that Pavin should have selected the 2 alternates from the rookie crew - not veterans. Oh well, the deed is done.

Also blame Tim Finchem for moving the date two weeks later due to the Fed Ex Cup. Wales looks like a cold, damp bog. Mist, damp.

They said two weeks ago it was beautiful.

If I never see Cory Pavin or his wife again it will be too soon. I cannot recall when a Ryder cup captain’s wife tried to steal the show. This woman’s ego is off the charts.

Nothing was shortened. The format is 4 4-ball and 4 alternate shot matches on Friday and Saturday and then 12 singles on Sunday. Because they didn't finish on Friday they changed the schedule so session 2 and 3 consisted of 6 matches instead of the usual 4. So basically after the first 4-ball matches were played on Friday everyone was be playing from then on, no chance of sitting anyone out.

Tim Finchem has nothing to do with the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup is a PGA of America event, not a PGA Tour event.

These red sweaters and shirts were the best of the bunch from Mrs. Pavin’s “collection”. I wonder if this was like a red commie badge back in Vietnam. Baby blue caps - idiotic.

Tiger with his bad a*s pose as he sprays his shots all over. If it wasn’t for Tiger playing with Stricker next to him - he would have looked worse. Stricker is such a nice guy. Why his friend’s with the pimp is beyond me.
