I agree.

Everyone wants to be different, just like everyone else.

It is a sign of where we are as a nation.

For some reason we gravitate to the lowest common denominator when the moral compass is set aside...

Like you white kids in baggy pants listening to rap and acting like thugs.

Back when I taught college a few years ago at the beginning of this trend, I would have kids complain that folks were discriminating against them because of their “body art”. I told them that many who would hire them were from a generation that had personal discernment and respect about themselves and found tats to be the thing of old sailors and long shore men, not professionals. “Body art” is not a protected class...

Be a trail blazer and don’t get one. :)

What’s gotten you so riled up over tattoos?

Based on your article, this old grandma has a problem...my grandson works for a lady from their church that does temporary tattoos, via paint....I surprised him and went to the local fair and had him put a tattoo on my shoulder that lasts about a week..

It was a heart with wings. I loved it. Now my other granddaughter (who is 22) wants grandma to go with her to a good tattoo parlor and get a small one on my shoulder with her....

Whats a grandma to do? I am thinking about it. My grand kids all think I am the funniest grandma in the world and 2 of them wrote stories about me being their hero. (Blush) It was in the 8th grade.

The only unwrinkled parts of my body (yuk) are my shoulders....

What do you think I should do....I am 71 and have never had a tattoo....but might be senile a little. LOL

Everytime I see a young girl with a tat, my first thought is, “Do you realize how stupid that is going to look when you’re 70?”
I think they’re gross.

a big shoulder blade tattoo rules out the ability for a woman to wear a strapless gown

sleeve tattoos make almost any office job unlikely

face / neck tattoos brand you as a moron and most likely a criminal while radically reducing your employment possibilities

you’re supposed to be adding opportunities to your life... not introducing limitations

This related article may be of interest.  It goes into a little bit of detail regarding how difficult it is to remove tattoos, as well as the troubles they can cause people later in life.

(From the UK Daily Mail, February 2009)

You may think tattoos look cool now, Peaches, but they'll be hell to get rid of (and it'll cost you thousands) - Mail Online

'I really regret ever having them done in the first place. It was a huge mistake and over time I started to hate each and every one of them. Worse still, every time I got dressed or had a shower I could see them. I wanted rid of them and had no idea it was going to be so difficult, painful and expensive.'

too many children with waaaaayyyy too much money.

In the ‘olden’ days, we changed hairdo’s, outfits, accessories to try to be ‘different’ and stand out from the crowd (or fit in, as the case may be). These days, busy working parents throw money at their children and allow them to destroy their future job options with this tatoo/piercing nonsense. The worst I’ve seen is young girl, maybe 20, with pirate symbols on her legs, arms, and back. So, Pirates of the Caribbean is going to be your favorite movie for all time??????

A friend of my son, beautiful girl, got ‘snakebites’ - lip piercings that are supposed to look like snake fangs. Her parents gave her the money and permission (under 18) to get these.

Parents are supposed to protect their children from stupid things that will spoil their future. At least make them wait till they are out of your house and have a job with health insurance!

I agree. Tats and PIERCINGS are worthless mutilations of ones' body.

However I did think The Illustrated Man was pretty cool. If I could have THOSE tats...

In general, I agree - and I have no tattoos on my body.

There are some people, however, who were just born to express themselves that way -

I work with the elderly. If young folks could see what happens to tattoos when they age and the skin sags, they might think twice about it. For instance, the rose on the perky chest at 20 becomes a long stemmed one at 70. I have NO tattoos, by the way! LOL

I've never understood the impulse. The most common response I've gotten over the years has something to do with “self-expression” and “individuality,” but that's bull. It's the same as wearing a suit and tie, or a leather jacket, or going nude—you're not an individual, you're just noting your being a part of a group.

When you don't mark yourself up or even care about hip clothes or haircuts, you are left only with your achievements and your personality as a means for people to judge you. And that's why I have contempt for folks who give those answers—they're done to appeal to people's JUDGEMENT even as they are usually the kind of folks who say “I don't judge’ and “I don't care WHAT people think of me.”

Yes, you do, and you care so much that you want your tat to signal how freaking coooool you are. How desperate.

I agree that the tattoo (and piercing) phenomenon has gone way too far. The tipping point was when it became “cool”. Way too many people have gotten, are getting tats in ways they will eventually regret. When they do, I am going to sit back and laugh my hind end off, and wish I owned a laser removal business.

With that said, you sound like a total bigot, painting with a very wide brush and judgmental brush.

First, I'm glad you posted this as vanity, for it certainly is. But since it has been posted, I thought I might add to the vanity, hopefully adding a bit of wisdom. Not mine - that of others. Best comment I ever heard - you may have heard it as well - originated I understand from a grandmother regarding her grandchild's tatoo: "A tatoo is a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling." I.e., an act of immaturity. It is perhaps the greatest 'sacrifice' one can make "to be cool". So why do older people get them? Clearly a tatoo indicates a strong desire along the lines of desiring a tribal identity - but that begs the question, "who is the tribe?" that the tatooed one so strongly wants to be identified with? Other tatoo-ees? I would also suggest that the tatooee is making a statement to the non-tatoo world akin to giving it the finger, stating "I am tough (-er than you)", I am a rebel, "I reject public opinion". But in reality, the tatoo-ee is more of a conformist than the non-tatoo-ee - by conforming with the latest fad for being cool.......emulating gang behavior. The non-tatoo-ee may actually be the one who is more of a non-conformist, by refusing to go along with the latest fad. All of this being said, I have absolutely no problem with anyone else getting a tatoo. While the body is meant to be the temple of God, that is the purpose and ideal, and as such should not be labeled otherwise, this truth applies to those of us who belong to God. And our attitude toward those who disagree should always be according to II Tim. 2:24, 25 and I Peter 3:15, that of love and gentleness toward those who think differently than we. But this is just my opinion. While I was not happy when my 26 yr. old civil engineer son who studied Greek got tatoo's, I was at least pleased with the statement they made. One, in Greek, small on his lower back states, "In God's hands". The other, very small on his wrist is "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior" arlis
