Thanks to all for the insightful replies. I always do read a lot more than I post here...in fact I had to fire up the old dial-up service that I kept for emergencies for this reply.

Cable internet says they’re doing ‘planned maintenance’ in my area tonight...although I talked to one of their repairmen a couple weeks ago—he said there was a bad wire somewhere...like looking for a needle in a haystack. Will check back later today.
