I guess you must be the expert. I guess Iowa,Britain, heck the world, needs YOU in charge so our food is safe. Yep, you got my vote. Please make our food safe.
I appreciate your post very much.
What I heard on the news about this outbreak of salmonella was that it did not involve cracked eggs. These eggs were laid by the chicken already infected with salmonella.
I love a good over easy egg with hash browns. I’ve always washed the shell before cracking, because, well, they shoot out of a chickens behind.
But I never thought about the interior.
I may just chance it. Seems big gov is always scaring folks about what they eat. Isolated incidents are used as “cattle prods”, IMO. To get us to doing what “they” want.
Whole Foods in Florida carries grass fed beef that’s raised in Florida. But every now and then I’ll try a different local farm. Check out www.eatwild.com
Chicken litter has been fed to cows for a LONG time. Chicken litter has a lot of protien and a lot of undigested fiber which a cow’s rumen can digest.
Not exactly my ideal breakfast, but is not a new practice either.
“I dont think you can get salmonella from properly cooked eggs”
You’re right, but there’s plenty of Americans who like soft-boiled eggs, fried eggs over easy, loose scrambled eggs etc. The solution may be (more expensive) pasteurized eggs for such folks while others willing to thoroughly cook their eggs can continue to rely on the current method of producing and distributing eggs.
So tell us WHAT is YOUR “agriculture” “background”? If you have none then STFU and learn.
Free range chickens are not vegetarians but I get your point. They eat bugs and will eat any dead animal they come across.
That’s especially true of organic food consumers. I grew up in a farming community and worked a couple of organic farms before they became the rage. I never had a problem with chem farms, but was even less worried about chemicals after working with organics!
I’ll tell you what, you keep eating what you eat and I’ll keep eating what I eat. I never said anyone had to stop eating conventionally raised anything.
God did not intend for cows to eat poop. He intended for them to poop in a field, have the nutrients in their poop fertilize the grass in the field, which then eventually makes it back into the cow.
But thanks to your comments, now we all know who’s full of $hit and who isn’t.
Yes, you’re right, chickens definitely love their bugs. I probably didn’t word that exactly right, but I suppose the point got across.
Lots of ignorant city folk on here...
The difference between cattle grain today and cattle grain 100 years ago? Today we use combustion combines, 100 years ago they used horse-powered or hand-powered threshers. No grain for cattle feed 100 years ago? LOL!
And they call us the stupid ones...
yep, I knew what you meant. :)
So if not commercial feed, then what other options are there for someone with, say, 50 chickens? If it’s true that all commerical feed is contaminated with bad stuff, then what should we feed them?
I’m not sure what I said that made you think I thought it was caused by cracked eggs.
I am a little unclear on how cooked they need to be. I like my eggs slightly soft in the middle (fried eggs that is) but NO LOOSE white, so no sunny side up. I’ve never gotten salmonella that I know of. However, I don’t order them that way in a restaurant because they never get it right (it’s technically over medium, but they generally come out with runny whites and that is disgusting!)
And yes, pasteurized eggs are an option(I’ve never bought them) but, how hot do they get them to do that? Do they not get that hot when you cook them over medium?
There are some good quality feeds to be had. We feed our quail FRM. I don’t think you necessarily need “organic”.
I am afraid to ask! ;)
