OLIVER SPRINGS - A Clinton man was arrested for his fifth drunken-driving offense Sunday afternoon. His lawnmower was taken to the impound lot.

The arresting deputy knew that Lonnie Michael Haney, 46, had had his driver's license revoked when he recognized the serial offender driving a John Deere riding mower southbound along the shoulder of the northbound lane on Tri-County Boulevard, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office incident report.

Haney allegedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, red glossy eyes, slurred speech and appeared unsteady on his feet, the report states. He failed a subsequent sobriety test.

Once arrested and seat-belted into the back seat of the deputy's cruiser, Haney also was outfitted with a helmet, the report notes, after he began banging his head against the inside of the vehicle.

He now is charged with felony DUI, driving on a revoked license and violation of the implied consent law, ACSO Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said.

A lawn tractor ain't much faster than walking.

But I guess walking was out of the question.

I think it is ridiculous that you can be arrested for DUI on a mower, horse or bicycle. It’s also ridiculous that you can be arrested for sitting in you car in your own driveway while listening to the radio and sucking down some suds.

I just think that getting a DUI for being on a lawnmower, bicycle or other slow moving device is kind of over the top.

If you must ticket for that, I realize it’s still a hazard, it should be some lesser violation. Reckless operation perhaps?

Anyone who wants to tell me that the potential for damage and destruction by a drunk driver on a lawnmower is the same for that of a drunk driver in an automobile, I’m listening. I could use the entertainment.

I think you are right but most state laws prohibit operation of any motor vehicle.

crazy but it is how the law is written.

It is ridiculous to be in your own driveway and get arrested.

A friend an myself were splitting firewood off to the side of my driveway, and we decided to take a break and have a brewski or 2. So, we got in my pickup truck and turned on some tunes. A State Trooper passed by and then suddenly stopped, put the car in reverse, and drove in my driveway.
He asked us what we were doing,a lthough it was obvious.

When we told him, he just shook his head and told us that if it weren’t for the fact that the firewood was right there, he would have to arrest us. But since the firewood was there, he believed our story and let us go.

But in the case with the lawnmower guy, he was on a highway, and a danger to everyone else. Plus the fact that this wasn’t the first time, he got what he deserved.

“crazy but it is how the law is written.”

The power of MADD, greedy local officials, and stupid people. Those groups team up to prevent any sort of sanity in the law. If a politician were to object to such a law, he or she would be branded a heartless baby killer who wanted people to die on the roads. *poof* The end of one political career.

It’s the same for smoking. A similar kind of effort was put into demonizing smoking. I smoke 3-4 cigars a week, only outside. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve gotten dirty looks, and saw women acting as if my second hand smoke would surely be the death of them.

Walking doesn’t work. If the cops see you walking they will likely stop you.

Then they have you for public intoxication and whatever else they feel like throwing in. Resisting, disturbing the peace, etc.

Even if you are drunk in your own home and the wife or someone calls even if for no reason other than you are drinking, you can be arrested at least for an overnight.

It is weird. Drinking is OK but getting drunk in any circumstances is all but illegal.

Yeah, this being his fifth DUI, he really needs to stay in his own living room if he's going to drink.

He doesn't need to be at the wheel, reins, or handlebars of anything.

How can you arrest someone for driving a lawn mower without a license when a driver’s license isn’t required to use a lawn mower? (In the country I’ve seen farmers who lost their licenses driving around on tractors.)

Not to mention something with rotating blades. I’m surprised he hasn’t cut anyone’s feet off yet!
