The author of this book...

...a veteran of Merril's Marauders was a big proponent of the carbine.

It's the perfect size weapon for a woman (imo). I love shooting it. And it's accurate as can be.

Nice Carbine! That group certainly looks well within minute of bad guy, too.

That’s another thing I like about the little rifle, it’s a good choice for my wife or boys to use.

Mine is sitting in a Ramline stock that I bought when the whole Clinton AWB was in the news. I didn’t own any black rifles, so I made one out of my Carbine. Bought a bunch of thirty round mags, too.

Thank you. I have 2 but both are ‘off brands’. I would love to have a Winchester but ...But I’m happy with what I have.

Yeah it’s perfect for that. It’s just a great rifle. My mom killed a deer with hers (years ago). Hit it through the shoulder so it does do the job.

I always have problems with the 30 round clips. They jam or misfeed and I can’t determine what the problem is. Dismal days during that time of AWB...M1911...I’m afraid we’re headed for worse now.

My father was also issued a carbine as a 2nd lieutenant in Europe. As soon as he got in the field, his NCOs told him to get rid of it. They said that the nazis knew that officers got carbines, so they were looking to kill the guy with the carbine.

IIRC the 30 round mags were intended for the M2 (full-auto version), if you can find a M2 magazine catch and switch out for your current one that should solve the feeding problems.

Thank you for that information! I didn’t know that. (would rather switch it over to an M2 instead... :) ) Will start looking.

The aftermarket thirty rounders I’ve tried are pretty iffy all around. There are some Korean made mags, both 15 and 30 round, that are supposed to be as close as you can get to USGI with out using a time machine.

Thanks for that information. I don’t think I’d heard that the Korean clips were better...I have several clips...15 and 30. The 30’s never get beyond about the 4th round. Don’t know where the clips were made..I’ve bought many and never checked that out.

A friend of mine years ago came out to my place to hunt deer with a .243 Mdl. 70 Win. and an M1 carbine with 2 15-shot mags taped upside down to each other and 10 rounds in each mag(which was legal at that time). A small buck jumped up in front of him as he drove his old car out to the field, so he grabbed and came up with the carbine and shot NINETEEN times at that deer, hit it twice (gutshot once and across the left rear ankle). My brother killed the deer with a 6.5 mm. Swedish Mauser. Friend got rid of the carbine after that. Always seemed a bit light for deer, IMHO.

“....and shot NINETEEN times at that deer, hit it twice (gutshot once and across the left rear ankle)”

Sounds like that could well be a shooter issue as much as a firearm or cartridge issue. My carbine will group five shots in about four inches at a hundred yards if I do my part off a bench. That’s about typical for the ones I’ve seen.

While the round is light enough that using it on deer isn’t legal in many states, it’s certainly capable of doing the job with proper placement. Seventeen loud noises and two marginal hits won’t kill a deer with about any rifle round you care to mention.

It was a shooter issue alright, he was very nearly blind and DID go blind a few years later. Needless to say, he wore out his welcome in a hurry on our place. Haven't seen the guy in years. You're correct, placement is key, but I still prefer something with enough oomph to knock one down and jump up and down on him if need be. Especially around here, where there's a lot of heavy brush hunting.
