Border Collies are considered by many to be one of the most intelligent and trainable dog breeds. Though they are wonderful companions, they require a lot of exercise and training.

That and we clocked him at 35 mph for a brief burst once (chasing our car). That's fast!! Ours will run in the [softball] field with our lab, but always cuts her speed so as not to depress the lab into quitting. We sometimes refer to the bc-mix as "sweetness" (aka Walter Peyton), because of her speed, and amazing capabilities to dart suddenly left to right ... fun breed ... I'd think about taking on another if we lived somewhere with space ...
Our dogs are #6 on the smartest breed list. We have two lovable, adorable and very beautiful Shetland Sheepdogs.
They are very smart and they do love their people and each other.
When 13 yr. old son was a little toddler and running . . . we had to train both him not to run through living room and dogs not to herd him. :)
I have a sable/white and a tri. I always have loved Collies my entire life and living in the South in the heat, for indoor I decided on Shelties instead. Best decision I ever made.
According to Stanley Coren's THE INTELLIGENCE OF DOGS, Goldens rank around 4th.
Here is our little 11th ranked Pembroke Welsh Corgi Riley:
My aunt had a working border collie raised on a dairy farm where he had responsibilities. He sustained her through young widowhood and a move to a new town . The dog found a new job taking the children to school and bringing them home - alone. Never leashed. After the children finished school the dog looked for a new position and found one herding steers. The farmer was not amused and demanded that the dog be leashed or put-down.
My aunt chose freedom and had him gently sent to heaven where he herds angels. He was 16 years young.
Had a friend visit with his border collie. The hair was unbearable. That’s why I have a poodle too.
My significant other lost her Border Collie “Rose” around Easter. Rose was 14 years old and was a true lady. She loved to fetch balls and would serve as De’An’s son’s batting coach when he playing t ball. God she was smart... Those eyes were capable of peering into your soul....
Thunderstorms played hell on Rose.... She absolutely hated them.
I bought her a new Border Collie pup last Thanksgiving. Kate is turning into a fine young lady. Lots of energy and tons of love.

I love doggie threads...great photo
I know Borders are considered to be very smart and by every indication they are, but we own an English Springer that is pretty d*mn smart. We took our Sheltie to puppy class first and as we were going through the practice sessions with him at home we noticed that our Springer had picked up the commands just by watching and was actually following them better than the Sheltie. She has gone on over the last 12 years to amaze us with the things she can learn and the things she can teach herself.
You sound just like me.. I've said "no more dogs" and now I'm thinking of moving just so I can have enough property for at least two Border Collies and who knows.. maybe sheep!Ha! I hear ya. If you decide to go for it, good luck finding the right piece of property. Once a dog lover ...
Jake is very distinguished. Great pictures!!
Clearly smarter than BO the Portugese Wonder/Water Dog, but then I don’t see many Border Collies getting to ride on their own airplane anywhere let alone to Maine!
If you dont mind a dog that has no “off switch” and you dont mind paw prints on the ceiling,
Then the border collie is the dog for you!
Thanks. Not posed, just a lucky shot with my guessimatic digital camera. Usually takes about 10 pictures to get one good one.
If you dont mind a dog that has no off switch and you dont mind paw prints on the ceiling, Then the border collie is the dog for you!Hahaha! That's true, but if you keep them busy, we've found, it's much better all around, and they actually stop chewing everything in the house and even rest for hours on end. But then after that, of course, it's time to play, and run, and do puzzles again some more ...
B.O. didn’t want a breed smarter than ... well, you know ...
My dad got into border collies about twenty years ago. The first five all went through some period of three years and eventually got run over by the rural road nearby or via some farm accident.
Four years ago, he acquired current border collie which stays near the farm house and never gets anywhere near the road.
The dog herds everything. It’ll herd cattle. It’ll herd cats (they hate it). It’ll herd kids if you gave the dog a chance. The dog needs twelve hours a day of human contact...no doubt. The negative is the thick coat of hair in the summer...which has to be trimmed off and they hate having it cut.
My aunt chose freedom and had him gently sent to heaven where he herds angels. He was 16 years young.*sniff* ... reminds me a little of Old Yeller ...
