Big, Big Trouble for North Carolina?

The early news on the NCAA investigation of the North Carolina football program sounded bad enough as it was, but apparently things may very well be far worse for the Tarheels than originally believed. According to Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated, this isn't just some random kicking of the tires by the NCAA:

The Tarheels were a legitimate threat to make a run at a .500 season next year.

Bad news for a program that has been able to steer away from trouble for so long. But I thought it’d be their hoops team that got caught first.

Might be time for Roy to click his heels together three times. This might drag down all the programs for 2 - 3 years, loss of scholarships, etc. “I wish I was in..”

Not meaning to dump only on N.Carolina,
BUT
What is up with these schools that hire coachs who have already been proven dirty?
Davis was dirty and proven so previously so ya hire the “proven winner” and he sends the program in to the toilet?

I think that in this particular case Baddour bought the hype that Davis was instrumental in moving Miami away from the drug, discipline, and pro-agent controversy that plagued Miami. The problem, though, is that all of these issues are a symptom of a coach (and athletic department in general) putting a winning record ahead of everything else. When discipline on a football team isn't a major priority, their performance ultimately tanks. You look at BC's teams when O'Brien was there, or ECU under Skip Holtz you see disciplined, performing teams. (Despite being a State fan, I hated to see Holtz go to South Florida. He was the best thing to happen to ECU football in YEARS.)
