Interesting. Thanks for posting. I used to drive near or through Mount Airy from Michigan on my way 4th of July baseball tournaments in Greensboro, NC every summer for several years in the ‘90’s with the youth teams I coached. Wasn’t that the birthplace or home of Andy Griffith?

Mount Airy, NC is Mayberry, and the birthplace of Andy Griffith. Just north of “Mt. Pilot.”
They took some liberties with place names and geography. Siler City isn’t a destination for anything much, and is not nearby. “Mt. Pilot” is Pilot Mountain, the mountain and the town. Cana, VA., just over the border, does have a few residents that might remind you of the Darlings, though.
It’s a pretty area. I’m surprised you didn’t pass through there from Michigan to Greensboro, on I-77 or US 52 to I-40.
