Missed meetings could mean jail time for parents

DETROIT (AP) -- The night Demarco Harris shot and killed a woman during a robbery on a Detroit street, his parents told police knocking on their door at 2 a.m. they didn't know where their 12-year-old was.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said that's indicative of a larger issue in Detroit, where the lack of making parents accountable for their children partly is blamed on elevated truancy and dropout rates, as well as a recent rash of violent crimes involving teens.

Worthy has a new idea she hopes will fix the problem: Jail parents for up to three days for repeatedly missing scheduled parent-teacher conferences.......

it is funny to see liberals blame everyone but the kid for the kid’s actions.

"...that's indicative of a larger issue in Detroit..."
Lack of accountability is part of the devolution and destruction of Black America, and indeed, all of America. When the only time a person is held to a standard of behavior or gets a "corrective reading" is in a courtroom, it is many years too late.

By then the die has been set, and the concept of "keepin' it real" does not involve raising your offspring and being a responsible member of your community.

Looking at society today makes me thankful my parents beat me!

If you don’t want liberals raising your kids for you, you should probably take enough interest in raising them yourself that you can manage to attend at least some of the parent teacher conferences.

I agree. About all we can do now is separate the kids from the parents. I suggest an army boot camp boarding school with some tough old staff sargents to discipline the kids. After a few years of that they might actually become functional adults.

In the first place, the odds against finding BOTH of Demarco’s parents at home—or at ALL—would be astronomical!!! And how exactly do you hope to legislate morality or propriety for a race which the left has knowingly and deliberately spent the past 50 years destroying for the sake of its own power??!! In 1950 a bastard child was far more likely to be white. Today, of course, 13% or the population account for...well, you know the drill. Dems have succeeded in garnering a perpetual 95%+ of the black vote, but the price for the rest of the nation has been the creation of a malignancy of gangs, crime, ignorance, welfare and societal decay. Three days in jail for mom ain’t gonna make a dent.

Agreed!

The democrats have deeply hurt the very people they say they’re helping. And now that they’re living in ghettos the people will vote again for democrats so that they’ll get more help. Viscous circle. And it was planned many, many years ago by the communists.

I agree with your position.

The “parents” in this case were never trained to be good parents to begin with.

Who trains a parent to be a good parent - their parents of course! And the loop goes back generations.

This is the real crime of extreme liberalism - the damage they have done, are doing, and will do to OUR children. Yes, to a degree every child out there is the collective “ours”.

The parents don't belong in jail (again?) for their child's actions. The family unit, parent and child, need to be on the streets paying for the cost of the crime committed by the child. The older the child and the egregious his crime the longer the family unit works performing community service.

Street cleaning, park maintenance, etc shouldn't be paid for by taxes - they should be paid for by those who have committed serious crimes.

If properly done the family unit would have vested interest in not repeating their actions.

IMHO the worst travesty of our legal system is trying a 15-year old for murder as an adult. Do we have to do it - YES. But the system failed the child because he/she has done similar acts ion the past without any extreme penalty.

Until our legal system (not Justice System) comes to grips with “How do we prevent a child from becoming a murder by age 15?” our society will continue to have serious problems.

i never go to parent teacher meetings. we can schedule them with whichever teacher we wish to meet. but we never do that. our son is a straight A student who is polite, respectful, goofy, and good natured. he isn’t a problem child who gets into trouble all the time. we did our job right as parents and therefore do not need to meet with the teachers to discuss all of his problematic behaviors.

Laws cannot make parents give a damn about their kids if they don’t give a damn in the first place.

Problem One: Finding the father

Problem Two: Who’s going to take care of the woman’s other 3 kids while she’s in jail? (Here’a a hint - it involves your tax dollars)

Very true. Some years back we had a young couple attending our church. Each of them had a history of foster homes, abandonment, juvenile delinquency, and some time in prison.

After prison, they met and ended up giving birth to a son. Many people from the church gave all manner of assistance. They wanted to be good parents, but did not know what a good parent was supposed to do. Neither of them ever had one. Very sad.

repeatedly missing scheduled parent-teacher conferences...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Government schools are a First Amendment ABOMINATION!!!

We have a God-given right to **free** assembly! It is right there in the First Amendment. If citizens do not want to assemble ( meet) with their kid's teacher it is their RIGHT not to do so!

By the way, parent teacher conferences are an absolute and utter WASTE OF TIME!!! The schools do what they want regardless of parent opinion or in-put.

There is only one thing that government schools are good at. Teaching citizens to be prisoners of the state.

Some cities are spending up to $30,000 per student.

It is likely that if vouchers and tax credits were made available for that amount, these parents would willing choose PRIVATE boarding schools that would resemble the boot camps you suggest.

Community service would be great. With Detroit's fiscal problems there is a lot of maintenance that needs done that most people could do without much training. It also might help to give more people pride in their community.

Of course it it hard to require community service unless you make it an alternative to going to jail.

Detroit would also need to set aside a sizable amount of money to defend against the civil rights lawsuits that would undoubtedly ensue. A lot of people don't believe the government has the right to require them to work, and some will likely make accusations of slavery.

I only had time to skim the article, but my basic feeling is that it’s going to take a helluva lot more than a couple of parent-teacher meetings to transform someone who lets their kid run wild into a good parent.
