ASHMORE, Calif.- A former Marine living in Illinois said he just received a letter his sister sent to him while he was serving at a military base 35 years ago.
Bob Dunning said the letter from his sister, Brenda Cassidy, was postmarked Jan. 6, 1975, and addressed to Camp Pendleton in California, but it arrived in mid-June at his Ashmore home, the Mattoon Journal-Gazette reported Tuesday.
Rick Reed, officer in charge at the Ashmore Post Office, said the letter arrived recently due to Cassidy's Ashmore return address and he delivered it to Dunning because he recognized the name.
Reed said the letter was likely at the base for years, perhaps wedged between pieces of equipment. Dunning said he received plenty of other mail from his sister. "I got all the other mail she sent me," Dunning said, quickly adding: "That I know of."
