HANOVER BOROUGH, Pa. -- Two pit bulls attacked an 8-year-old boy and his mother Tuesday night in the Hanover, according to the Hanover Borough Police Department.
Police said the child and his mother, both from Connecticut, were visiting friends at a home along the 400 block of Pleasant Street. Around 9:30 p.m., the boy went outside with the homeowner to play in the yard when the two dogs, which were being held in a separate fenced-in area, jumped the fence and "immediately attacked" the boy, according to police. The homeowner hit the dogs with a hose, trying to get them to stop.
The boy's mother heard him scream and ran outside. She was able to grab her son, but the dogs chased her and bit her as well.
Police said the home where the attack happened is a multi-unit dwelling. The dogs' owner lives in one of the units and was eventually able to capture one of the dogs and secure it. Another neighbor hit the second dog with a stick while it continued its attack, police said.
When officers arrived, they shot and killed the second dog, which they said was still behaving aggressively.
The boy suffered severe injuries to the back of his head and both ears. He was treated at Hanover Hospital then transferred to Hershey Medical Center. There is no word on his current condition.
The boy's mother was treated at the hospital for injuries to her arms.
