I do a bit of genealogical research. In America's early days, it was not uncommon for a woman to begin motherhood at 21 and finish somewhere when menopause kicked in. The average number of children was from 5 to 12 children per family.

That is how our country was initially populated.

My Grandmother who was the sweetest person you could imagine was a tiny girl. She had 13 children. They lost their first baby at age 1 and mourned him the rest of their life. The rest lived long lives.

Her first one was back in the 1800s and I guess the last was in the late 30s. When she died her last words were of that baby she lost.
