SAN ANTONIO -- Animal Care Services officials need your help to track down a couple they say stole a dog from the municipal shelter Thursday.

The dog is a 2-year-old mixed breed female with black, brown and white coloring. The dog was slated for rescue by the Animal Defense League who had performed an evaluation on her just minutes before she was taken.

The theft was caught on camera. Security system video shows staff evaluating the dog shortly before a couple approaches the animal's enclosure from different directions. After what appears to be a brief conversation, the woman pulled a leash from her purse, opened the kennel, and led the dog out of the kennel.

The woman is described as a white female, who is 30-40 years old with long dark blonde or brown hair and medium build/height. She was last seen wearing a pink sweater, beige t-shirt, and jeans and was carrying a dark pink or red purse.

The man is described as a heavyset Hispanic male, who is 30-45 years old. He has black hair with a receding hairline (shaved on sides and pulled into a long ponytail on top). He was last seen wearing a denim or light-colored long sleeve work shirt and jeans.

If you have any information about this case, please immediately call the San Antonio Police Department at 210-207-SAPD (7273) or call Crime Stoppers at 224-STOP (7867), submit a tip online, or text a tip by texting "Tip 127 plus your tip" to CRIMES (274637).

I dont se the big deal. The shelter places dogs in homes, and now the dog has a home.

Pit Bull training...or perhaps the woman owned the dog and just went and got her. The dog was leash trained obviously and just walked out of the building with a stranger? There’s more to this story.

THE PERP FESSES UP:
This is the most outrageous misunderstanding I have ever heard of!!! I am the owner and person taped at the Animal Shelter. I was NEVER told the protocol of checking back into the office!!! There was no personnel around or available to assist me or ask if there was something further to do to claim my dog. I am completely offended and embarrassed at the actions taken. Those of you who are so quick to place blame and judgement should be ashamed, as should the Animal Care Services!! The video of me "conspiring" with the man I have never in my life seen is a complete misrepresentation of my character and I am beyond anger at the insinuations it presents. SHAME ON YOU ALL!!!!!!!!

Well, it sounds as if their approach to dog adoption was a bit unusual. But we can hope they’ll give him a good home. Isn’t that the whole point?

I read a local story yesterday about a man being arrested for beating his Jack Russell with a hammer (he claims he was house training it).

Sadly it was a dog he got from the humane society.

It cost big bucks to pay for shots, etc. They had more dogs than they needed. Its not fair for them to have so many dogs. They get them for free and then charge you for their “up grades” like vet. care, baths, nurse back to health. Not fair to charge poor dog lovers that just want to have a pet. Etc. Etc. Etc. Monkeys need dogs.

Perhaps it was their dog that got caught by the dog catcher and they didn’t have the bail money but wanted their dog back? I’d hate to think with the economy the way it was that they may have been in a position that they had to choose between groceries and bailing the dog out?

I’m glad the owner got the dog before the ADL; I’d rather get a root canal than deal with those nutballs.

Does the person who owns the dog believe it s RIGHT to just walk in and TAKE it without letting the temporary caretakers KNOW the OWNER is claiming the dog?

Looks like the doggie was rescued by someone who cared . I got my dog from a wondeful rescue outfit and was happy to pay a reasonble fee . If people with a good home were to ever steal a dog from them they would not call the cops . They would move on to plow a more fertile portion of God’s creation and rescue another dog .

We have had wonderful pets from shelters too!

You maybe right that the person didn’t want to pay a fee because they FEEL ENTITLED to NOT paying any fees or even thanking the folks there for caring for their dog. This sounds like a typical, rude, liberal mindset. Who knows ... maybe the pet showed signs of abuse or neglect?

One piece missing from the story: what it would cost to reclaim the dog from the shelter now that government workers had processed paperwork on the animal.

“Pit Bull training’’. Yup, sadly this is probably the case. people who do this to dogs ought to be thrown into a pit with a couple of hungry bears.

Around here it is close to $100 to bail your dog out. That is witout them doing anything but brining it in bathing it and putting it into a cage.
