Former Starting QB Hill Traded to Lions
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Sunday, March 14, 2010

Quarterback Shaun Hill went from odd man out to simply shipped out Sunday.

The 49ers traded last season's opening-day starter to the Lions for a seventh-round draft pick. The trade becomes official today when new backup quarterback David Carr arrives to work with a signed contract, according to multiple reports.

The 49ers and Carr agreed in principle to a two-year contract last weekend but Carr was out of the country on vacation. A source close to Carr expects him to arrive Monday for the first day of voluntary offseason workouts at team headquarters with his signed contract in hand.

In Detroit, Hill will take the same role he had when he came to San Francisco in 2006 - backup to a former No. 1 overall draft pick, substituting Lions starter Matthew Stafford for presumed 49ers starter Alex Smith.

Hill, 30, started the first six games last season before Smith regained his starting job. He was 10-6 as a starter with the 49ers, including a 5-3 run in 2008 that helped interim coach Mike Singletary land the full-time job.

Singletary named Hill his starter in training camp last summer, and Hill rewarded him with a 3-1 start, but he was benched during the sixth game of the season - the team's third loss in four games - and Hill did not throw another pass.

The management of the 49ers are putzes. How can they go into the season with a starting QB who has failed completely over five seasons. He's lost the starting job in preseason to Tim Ratay, JT O'Sullivan, and Sean Hill. He got worse in every game he played last season. Under Sean Hill, they were 3-1, and one fantastic Brett Farve play from being 4-0. I'm not claiming Hill is a great QB, but Smith did not outperform him. The best the 49ers can hope for is now 7 wins, and that would require David Carr coming in and playing very well.

I agree. This was a stupid decision. Hill may not have “looked” good but his win-loss record spoke for itself. The ultimate irony is this: Hill won the head coaching job for Singeltary with his play in 2008 after Nolan was fired.

Good point. If Singletary isn’t careful, Smith will lose the job for him. I predict Carr will be starting games in the first half of the season.

Online, there used to be a game called “David Carr Quarterback Simulator”. You snap the ball and a lineman sacks you in 1-1/2 seconds. Then you snap it and a blitzing linebacker sacks you. Then you snap it and a corner sacks you, etc.

He basically got the snot beat out of him in Houston and he lost confidence in his abilities and his teammates. He was worse after four seasons than he was when he first arrived.

Despite backup roles in Carolina and with the Giants, Carr has never gotten “it” back and probably never will. Sad. He seemed like such a good man. But the NFL is brutal that way.

He talks a good game and he still has the raw skills but he doesn’t read defenses well and wilts under pressure. He’s the sort of player that makes a GM look bad for expecting a change of scenery to help him.

As a Carolina Panther fan I can say Carr sucks. He cares more about his hair then he does winning

Not a fan of Singletary as a HC.

My son runs track and plays football. We do a drill where I hike the ball behind a tree. He has the option to either blitz me or try to break up the pass. I have become adept at throwing the ball away because I am too old to run away from him.
At 14, he weighs what I weighed at 25 and is two inches shorter than me.

This is what usually happens to detroit quarterbacks. Detroit drafted some decent quarterbacks and subsequently destroyed them, turning them into gunshy wimps....I used say that when the ball is snapped, you count.....one, onethousand, two onethousand..all the way up to four onethousand...after that the q’back is on his own...detroit got to one onethousand and he was out of the pocket or hit..without an offensive line, it does not matter who is in the backfield ( unless you are barry sanders )
