Norway has a lot of oil and they aren’t afraid to drill for it, so their oil wealth is paying for their socialism.
Also many nations have left it to the USA to pick up the huge military costs of being the world’s policeman which allows them to spend that money on social programs instead of defense. For example I read a report stating that New York City’s police force is larger than Canada’s military.

True, but my understanding is that much of that oil money is set aside for the future. My best friend in grad school was a Norwegian and she said that in many ways Norway was still like the poor country it was before oil, because the government doesn’t spend all the oil money. They still have to have separate retirement funds separate from the government and the students get student loans, just like over here. I tease her all the time about the ‘people’s republic,’ and while they certainly are a socialized system, it looks like, even with their small population, the government can’t pay for everything anymore.
