My niece went through hell in middle school and high school because she was one of the prettiest girls in the school. She is also a very sensitive young woman in her temperament. Not in an over sensitive manner, just a sweet mild mannered personality. In other words, she doesn't have it in her to be a bi#*h like some of the other girls who attended her school. Yeah, she toughed it out but it did have its effects on her. Some can bury it or deal with it, while others, like this poor girl in the news are walking a mine field.
“For many, ‘mean girl’ practice starts early”
“...Research shows that mothers will respond forcefully if their young daughters bite or hit someone, Simmons says. But verbal bullying is different.
Very often, moms say, Thats just girls being girls. But if you make light of it and dont intervene, youre giving your daughter permission, she says.
Coloroso says its imperative to acknowledge bullying regardless of age because the behavior often progresses.
She described a case last year in Washington state in which a group of sixth-grade girls made an animated video set to a Hannah Montana tune and put it on YouTube. Titled Top Six Ways to Kill Piper, the video showed two girls shooting their classmate, shoving her off a cliff, poisoning her, and making her kill herself. The perpetrators, 11 and 12 years old, were disciplined by their school, but no criminal charges were filed.
If we dont handle it in grade school, Coloroso says, it only gets worse.”

Middle school is certainly one of the more ridiculous inventions of modern history. A read into history shows many examples of 13-year-olds doing amazing and productive things, versus today's typical American middle schooler.
Sad thing, there are days when I look around at the adults, and wonder if some of them have not left middle school....

LOL...I assume you have/had a teenaged daughter? No, I have an 8 year old daughter who tries to act like she's sixteen. She's going to be a lot of work.

LOL
Gave my kids martial arts schooling = sort of the Chuck Norris school of interpersonal relationships.
The only rule I had was - talk means *ick. If they touch you - have at ‘em, I’ll back you 110%.
Problem solved instantly and for the next 4 years....
They are older now, one has children, the other soon to be married.
And my baby? Just got his discharge from the Corps.

We have always encouraged her. Her personality type will make her a great wife, mother and friend. While the girls who did the bullying to her, if unrepentant, will most likely live very miserable lives if they carry their attitudes and personalities with them into adulthood. Actions and attitudes always catch up with them in the end, eventually.

All I know is that I am fed up with the school systems letting it happen. This country and the West in general are collapsing because we have allowed all of this to go on. You don’t hear about bullying in Chinese or Japanese schools. You don’t hear about the stuff going on these days in Asian countries, or India.
I know that she will end up doing well in life, but it’s not enough. School should be a haven, same as the home. It’s for learning. Our students aren’t learning anything because they are on constant alert, hoping that the pigs who bully other students don’t notice them. It’s revolting.

You may not hear about bullying going on in Japanese
schools but it is common as is suicide from the pressure.

Totally agree. There should be a Zero tolerance policy at every school. Unfortunately, the schools are not effective in enforcing these policies which only makes the problem worse. Every kid should be safe at school and that isn't happening. Can you imagine what would happen to a co-worker who constantly harassed or intimidated another employee? They would lose their job or worse. Why is the school environment any different from the real world?

Not all of us would sue. Our sons have our permission to defend themselves. They know that they better have done a good job to get the parents called into the office. But, we believe in the “defend properly once and the job is done” scenario.

Perhaps. But all I do know is that it’s not something that is bragged about by the parents and I am sure the schools try to keep it in check.

I really have no idea. We’re going to start losing a lot of bright minds though. Another poster mentioned that a brilliant kids killed himself, he was supposedly as smart as Einstein and when I think about it, this girl likely had a lot going for her too.
It’s really no wonder that the Chinese are doing better. It’s considered a disgrace if a child acts out in the school environment. It’s utterly warped.

You dont hear about bullying in Chinese or Japanese schools. You are uninformed. Just google "bullying Japan" and read some of the articles.
