Harding’s main problem is that he was surrounded by questionable individuals, one of the main culprits especially being Albert Fall, the Secretary of the Interior. Supposedly the claim was he died of a broken heart after realizing just how corrupt some of the people he trusted were.

Fall, the former chairman of the senate interior committee, was well qualified for the job he was given. After Harding died Fall was convicted of bribery for taking cash from Edward L. Doheny, which he claimed was a loan. This was the famous “Teapot Dome scandal”. Doheny was acquitted of bribery, and then foreclosed on Fall’s ranch for failure to pay back the loan!
