WASHINGTON -- Google plans to build experimental, ultra-fast Internet networks in a handful of communities around the country.

The search company said Wednesday that its fiber-optic broadband networks will deliver speeds of 1 gigabit per second to as many as 500,000 Americans. Google Inc. says those systems will be more than 100 times faster than the networks that most Americans have access to today.

In a blog post, the company said the networks will let consumers download a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes and allow rural health clinics to send 3-D medical images over the Web.

Meanwhile they go through all your personal chit on Facebook and now have added Buzz to your Gmail so that they can track your messages?

These people are not in our best interests, me thinks.

So you can download a 2 hour movie in 5 minutes... wow. You can do that already, start watching as it downloads.

And how will the rural clinic download using this since these are being put in cities and not in rural areas?

Hope they fail. Google’s jumped the shark. A two-faced company started by jerks. Personally, I’m sick of hearing about them.

All of this stuff can be done today. gig network speeds are not required, nor the expense associated with them.

Yup.
Maybe Google hasn't heard of movie streaming. I do that all the time, without even bothering to download anything. Why download when you can stream?

Cause I like watching my movies at 1080p, just try streaming that on current networks.

It would also be helpful for true cloud computing. Soon we’ll be able to pay a monthly rate to own a virtual computer that would be continuously upgraded. For someone like me who upgrades my computer and software every few months, this would be a godsend. If I want to play the latest game, I wouldn’t have to buy a new video card but instead play it from Google’s supercomputer.

Why download when you can stream?

As far as a network is concerned, they are the exact same thing. The only difference is whether you store it or not.

Yes, ignore market demand and build away!

That's a plan that sure to work.

Yes but then I can start viewing my movie at once when I stream, without waiting to finish downloading before watching, like in downloading a movie. I stream movies all the time over my super fast Verizon FIOS with no problems whatsoever. Why the heck would I need a 1 gig from Google? I don't really see the point in downloading movies at all anymore.

Netflix and Hulu, as well as sites like TVPC, which has quite a few of the latest movies as well as the old classics.
