I saw a documentary once on people who crave having parts of themselves amputated. They sometimes make up phantom illnesses to get doctors to do it. Occasionally they will resort to extreme measures such as shooting themselves in the knee in a bid to have the surgery be unavoidable. Of course, reputable surgeons will have none of it. It is considered a mental illness or abnormality or whatever the correct clinical term is these days.

It makes you wonder though, is the desire to surgically transform yourself into another gender a similar condition? If it is, why treat it differently from the person who desires to be a double amputee?
