You want a large magazine and a rapid rate of fire. Volume is quality. If you miss with the first shot, the sounds of the second, third, fourth, etc will deter all but the most fool hardy.

Exactly my thoughts as well - at ranges in a house, you need to be as accurate with a shotty as you do a rifle; the shot doesn't start spreading for 10-15 yards, minimum.

Lots of ammo - I've never heard anyone in a firefight complain of too many rounds available! Because if at first you don't succeed,

Shotguns must have at least an 18 inch barrel. If a person is buying a shotgun for self defense and not hunting, then I would recommend the Maverick. It is made by Mossberg(and the barrels are interchangeable with Mossberg barrels)and is very inexpensive(some models are under $200.00).For home use I would go with the shortest barrel the law allows, 18 inches.

This is a lady in her sixties, do you really see her crawling around in the darkness “on offense”? I think she is more concerned about protecting herself in the case of civil unrest than in launching her own operations.

Those DPMS are fine rifles, that's for sure. But if I may make a suggestion check out one of the AK variants on the market.

They're a good deal less expensive than AR types. You can put the difference in money into ammo and, more importantly, range time.

AK's are rugged, reliable almost to a fault, very easy to clean and maintain, and are readily available today.

Handle one at your local dealer and see what you think.

A small lever action .22 . They hold many rounds ready for instant firing . Almost no recoil (kick), easy on the ears ,( still best to wear ear some protection at practice) ,rounds are Cheap to shoot . You can practice until you have confidence in your safe handling and marksmanship . You must practice and you are not likely to do much of that with a shot gun unless it is a small one . A thoughtful Freeper has suggested a .410 ,which is a very small shot gun . Unlike Freepers who are are tougher than most , criminals will not keep bothering you with even a .22 round in the center of their body . In your training they will tell you to use only aimmed fire and keep using aimmed firing until you can see by the targets reaction he is stopped . Henry rifles are Economical , light easy to use , compact enough for indoors , reliable , 100% American made . Get some training and develop a mindset that you are not going to be one of those persons who was so hesitant to shoot that the bad guy took your weapon from you . I hope you are blessed that you never have to use it against a person , but will be ready if that terrible day ever comes .

Ruger just came out with a new AR (SR-556) so did SIG (SIG516). Both were covered in the last two issues of American Rifeman. They might cost more than the DPMS and seem to focus on reliability. Article on the SIG shows the gun being buried in mud and still functioned normally.

With these jokers, you have to do it in self-defense.

But seriesly, the AR-15 is a good choice. There’s not much recoil and it’s accurate well beyond normal property-line ranges. Get one chambered for 5.56 vice .223, there is a difference. Although the rounds are externally the same, the 5.56mm is a hotter round which might cause a rifle chambered for .223 to fail. This is something to consider if civilan sources dry up and all that’s left are military spec rounds.

Go to your local gun store and look at the pump and semi-auto defense type shotguns with full length magazines and AR style pistol grips. They are in the DPMS price range but don’t have the magazine capacity. Some have a detachable magazine which would be the ultimate for home defense I’d think.

I like my Sporticle. That said, if you are new to shooting consider a .357 lever gun from Marlin and a 4” revolver to match. Practice with .38+P.

Mossberg makes shotguns for kids, beginners and small adults.
Do a Google search for - Mossberg Model 500 Bantam Shotgun - and you'll find a lot of choices.
