Time to Prepare for Black Friday

At about this time of year someone starts a thread in which everyone can chip in his ideas and leads for extraordinary shopping bargains in the run-up to the big shopping day after Thanksgiving. Two years ago I got a terrific deal on a computer and 24 inch screen from Dell through these threads. It was a rather complicated affair in which the computer had to be selected, then upgraded, then have a rebate and coupon applied, yet it was well worth the effort and it was certainly a deal I never would have found otherwise.

Any good tip on any deal would be welcome.

I am back in the market for another such computer now and I hope someone can offer as good a shopping tip.

blackfriday.info & others had a netbook with windows for $129 with windows at Officemax, but it’s since been pulled and we have yet to get confirmation, but if true, that looks like the best deal to me.

I never have and never will participate in the black friday madness.

To me Black Friday represents the epitome of what has become of Christmas, materialism over celebrating Christ’ birth.

Buying crap for others they usually neither need or want while they do likewise for you, all from stores that have policies forbidding even the use of the word Christmas.

I enjoy the madness. Odd, but I do. And I get things I need at decent prices.

Christmas Tree Shops is a good place to shop (open all year-—with merchandise suited to each season).

The assortment of high quality Christmas items is breathtaking.....you want to buy one of each.

Best of all, they do not hide behind PC——there’s lots of items that are religious-oriented.

I love Black Friday. But I'm not out there trying to beat someone up over the "hot" toy. I'm taking advantage of all the dirt cheap prices for things we need. I have a son leaving for college next summer, I plan to have him fully set with cheap items this winter. Coffee pots and toasters for $4, microwaves for $25...how can this not be fun? And don't forget, many stores have the same bargains online starting on Thanksgiving night, so you don't even have to leave home!

As linked above, I highly recommend gottadeal.com. Browse the forum for online deals daily. Those ladies (and some men) find amazing bargains.

Desktop or notebook?
PC or Mac?
Which operating system?
What will be the computer's primary use?

Desktop or notebook?

Strange as it sounds, I could go either way. Let me explain, we are a house of seven people six of whom are capable of using computers. We had a computer in the kitchen, a laptop, whose screen delaminated as it otherwise went kaput. I use this computer to read the morning headlines to the children at breakfast and pontificate upon them at length to their undisguised annoyance. My wife suspects the laptop was sabotaged. She would like a computer in the kitchen at dinnertime because she can listen to Rush as she prepares dinner here in Germany when he comes on at 6 PM our time. Alternatively, I could buy a refurbished or really cheap desktop, or even an all-in-one, for the kitchen and wait another couple of years for the technology to advance and get myself another really good computer.

PC or Mac?

We have only PCs in the house and I know but little about Macs except the cult like devotion of their adherents. I am willing to experiment if it is compatible and can network.

Which operating system?

We have PC XP Pro on every machine that I had not yet seduced into Windows 7, feeling that my crack IT team-my 13 year old-is pretty well tied up school and soccer. And for this reason I have not explored any other OS.

What will be the computer' s primary purpose?

Depending on the answer to the first question it will either serve as a kitchen countertop utility similar to a radio or TV, or it will be the lead computer used for small business activity, watching American television here in Germany (that means primarily Fox and downloaded shows for the wife and kids), Skype, and of course, Free Republic-the pontificating never seems to end. I need good memory for my computer because I like to have either TV or radio going in the background.

Anyone with insights to offer will find them gratefully received.

Thanks for all the info.

I can recommend without reservation any desktop or notebook computer made by Lenovo. You may be saying, "Leno who?" That's because Lenovo does not market to retail stores. Their computers are made for and marketed to businesses.

Their machines are extra sturdy, made to shrug off abuse. Their ThinkPad notebooks are designed for "road warriors."

Most any machine you buy today will come preloaded with Win 7. But, believe it or not, the Lenovo Outlet store still has some XP computers available. Link.

Full disclosure: I have no connection to Lenovo whatsoever. Except that I think they make terrific computers :)
