This animated map provides a striking visual of employment trends over the last business cycle using net change in jobs from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on a rolling 12-month basis. We used this approach to provide the smoothest possible visual depiction of ongoing employment dynamics at the MSA level. By animating the data, the map highlights a number of concurrent trends leading up to the nations present economic crisis. The graphic highlights the 100 largest metropolitan areas so that regional trends can be more easily identified.

The fact that democrats took control of congress in 2006 makes this map all the more interesting.

Those last few seconds remind me of the
war room scene in "Wargames" when the computer-generated missiles are slamming into the U.S. Starts 16 seconds into the video. An eerie comparison.

Sad to see that there are no ‘good’ places, only less bad places.

Unless you are interested in the “100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas”, this map is useless. There is a whole lot of us beyond.

There is another animated map out there that is county by county for the same time period.

Bookmarked. Thanks.
Hurricane Katrina was striking. 2009 is an unfortunate testament to His Awesomeness.

I empathize with you, having been born and raised in "fly over country" myself, but it's still not useless. The biggest "nuclear" explosions of unemployment in 2009 are all in areas that went heavily for Obama in the last election.

Not only that -- but the first big "hit" was New Orleans at Katrina. But the losses in NY and CA at the end of the video dwarf even those.
NO cheers, unfortunately.
