As far fixing the problem, doing system restore in safe mode should roll it back before the patch was applied.
System restore did the job just fine.
The Geek Squad gig was a last resort, cuz I didn’t want him to drive home for me or his older (geek) brother to have to fix it. As it turned out, the Geek Squad rep started the System Restore program and 8 minutes later it was all good.
My son was the third person in the store that day with a dead 64 bit Vista system.
