I think he stood a chance of reinstatement but for some reason (money?) he admitted he did gamble on his team but he also (to remove all doubt?) admitted to lying about the gambling.
Believe his ‘greed’ (or maybe need to make a living) is his downfall.
Is it just me, or does “*Gasp* He bet on baseball!” have the same ring to it as “*Gasp* She showed her bare shoulders in public!”? I mean, in the age of rampant steroid use and all manner of other bad behavior, doesn’t it seem like kind of a quaint thing to be scandalized over?
I think the writer is correct in pointing out that Giamatti’s untimely death is what gave the ban its sacred, “engraved upon the slabs at Sinai” quality. It’s time to let this die. Nobody thinks Rose is a model human being; everyone thinks he was a great ballplayer. There’s no reason for him to continue being the only ballplayer on the planet to be shunned in this way.
