In our area some fast food places are firing, suspending, etc. employees that have been loyal to replace them with work release employees. They can pay less than minimum wage, no benefits, no overtime pay, and have a tax break.
At some point people will begin to ignore the laws and just get down to business on their own terms as free people. The regulatory monster will starve.
The County Prison stopped paying the CorrctionalOfficers many weeks a go. You show up,you work, you DO NOT GET PAID. The State is not paying some of its workers. I had a conversation with what passes for a Human Resource Manager a few weeks back. He basically said he tells his workers you are going to do whatever I want you to do whenever Iwant you to do it and smile the wholetime or you are gone.Thats just how it is now.....
Remeber sometimeback the term “going postal” When the shootings start we have to come up with a new name. Maybe Going Obama or Going Zero......
It isn't always that easy or simple.
A few years ago after 911 I was laid off from an insurance company. It took almost three months to find another job and it found me.
It wasn't that I was too proud to work it was that I couldn't even get an interview at walmart and other similar jobs. Yeah, got an interview with a local Blockbuster, but nothing.
Overqualified. Apt to move on when something better comes along. Not a good fit. Made too much in last job....
So it isn't just as simple as swallowing pride and getting a job!
Was talking to old friends this weekend, like us, they are nearing retirement age and like us, they are more in debt than ever before. I have no non-business debt but that business is supposed to pay for our retirement and it has gone way south and no...we aren’t hiring.
It looked so bad at the end of last year that we all started looking for jobs but that was just at the time everybody was laying off around here. Nobody wants us older folks except Walmart for greeters and they already have enough.
We know a young man who is starting up a new business, I am going to go to work for him to show him the ropes, I hope he succeeds and I end up with a permanent job.
Wanna e-mail me with some tips? I’m stuck up here in 12.2% (listed) unemployment rate Oregon (18% with those who quit looking), and I am thinking I need some assistance.
I have some ideas, I just don’t know where to utilize.
Been there Titus, outsourced for the 2nd time in 2003 and I finally gave up on the IT industry and have been driving over-the-road since then. I haven’t looked back and have no regrets. A Class A CDL is gold. You can live whereever you want and will have a job.
Been there, done that TWICE. DID go through my savings, before finding something. Did the pizza delivery thing, helped start a restaurant, drove a delivery truck for a printshop (and got into shape doing it too!)
That stinks, sorry. Are you computer literate? One older fellow put an add in the neighborhood newsletter to help computer dim-wits (like me). He was flooded with calls for assistance and now has a wee geek business going. Another ex-exec started a handyman business. He’s going strong, even has a magnetic logo on his old pick-up truck. We home-makers love him. He even changes light bulbs on high-pitched ceilings (and charges for that, too).
The sad part that I'm finding, as I'm starting to know where to look, is that there is already a large underground cash-based and barter-based economy out there. It's hiding in plain sight but its going on all the time (and that's in addition to the massive cash-based economy that revolves around illegal substances, prostitution, stolen goods trafficing, etc.)
Why is that sad? I have no problem with the underground economy considering the restrictive government that rules us. I know people who are probably millionaires on the underground economy. And I'm not talking about illegal substances either.
Some people pay for that, too!
Isn’t the so called underground economy against the law?
I'm not the chap who keyed a Dean's car, misappropriated 6 figure sums, disappears for hours on end, takes long smoke breaks, and openly runs a side business on site. I am just a typical mwm with a dog. Not perfect, not even close. However politics are first and foremost with some people.
I found something on Craigslist, granted not great, but was sort of related to computer hardware. So far, not a bad place to work but no glamour. I don't miss the 1/2 ton hen or going downtown. It will do for the short term until something better comes along. I keep my eyes open and ears to the ground. I may have a line or two on something unconventional. As long as it is legal, I will entertain ideas.
I make a little side money fixing computers sometimes and some photo gigs which I enjoy. I have been looking to reactivate essentially dead stock photo and video submissions. It has not been easy with my schedule of the past few months to schedule any talent. However, I keep on trying with my 50D. I hope to upgrade to a HD capable camcorder in a few months.
Just why should anyone work in the this country now? It is much easier to lament about other people winning life’s lottery and complaining about racism, economism, classism, homophobia, heterophobia, hemophiliobia (I know that’s just wrong!), and all of the other “-bia’s”. Shit, it’s just easier to pester a doctor until he relents to get a statement for disability, go on SSI, go on AFDC, go on EITC, go on EBT, medicare, medicade, gatorade and all the rest.....ain’t no use in workin’ anymore..
I would trick the HR manager on some pretext into one of the cell blocks, leave him there and then yell “Thanks for the tip....we’re gonna get that bastard tonight”....
ALL ABOARD THE GRAVY TRAIN, CHOO CHOO!
Good luck. I know it's tough out there
