******* Maryam Yusefzadeh, a management consultant in Minneapolis, said she objected bitterly to the rule of Irans mullahs.
She has not returned to Iran since leaving in 1975. I simply cant accept some man telling me to cover my head because he cant control his penis, she said. It just wont fly with me.
The theocratic regime had blatantly stolen the presidential election and was intent on destroying the people of Iran.
Mr Obamas softly softly approach, however, was wise. The good aspect is that he didnt walk in there like the typical American cowboy bullying his way in.
Western-style democracy, moreover, could not be imposed from outside. The Westernised approach to democracy will never, ever take root in the Middle East. That is not their culture. That is not the way people think.
The people in the Middle East require strong leadership. They are not necessarily always independent thinkers. They want to be able to do what they want to do but they still want to have a fatherly figure.
But there was a danger that human rights and womens rights would fall by the wayside in the attempt to negotiate with Iran over the nuclear issue. Thats whats happened in Africa. The whole genocide thing was overlooked.
Ms Yusefzadeh believes that Mr Obamas Muslim background which he played down during his election campaign but now highlights abroad will help him understand Iran and be respected by its leaders.
They would listen to him a lot more openly because they dont think of him as a pure Westernised person. It is a big deal. They can relate to that part of him, the middle name of Hussein, him being brought up in an Asian country.
