Grand Forks mom pleads guilty in (drunken) breast-feeding case

A Grand Forks mother who police say was “extremely intoxicated” while breast-feeding her 6-week-old pleaded guilty to child neglect Tuesday. A Grand Forks mother who police say was “extremely intoxicated” while breast-feeding her 6-week-old pleaded guilty to child neglect Tuesday.

Officers responded to an unrelated call at a Grand Forks residence in the early morning of Feb. 13 and saw 26-year-old Stacey Anvarinia slurring her speech and breastfeeding, prosecutor Meredith Larson told the judge.

Citing a police report, Larson said officers were concerned about the infant’s welfare, so they called Altru Hospital and were told that breast-feeding while intoxicated was not good for the child.

“Ms. Anvarinia was notified of that, and she continued to make attempts to breast-feed,” Larson said.

Anvarinia, who no longer is in custody, is slated to be sentenced on the Class C felony charge Aug. 7.

Judge Sonja Clapp of state District Court said Anvarinia will not have to register as an offender against children.

Is there anything to that — White Russian breast milk? Or is the danger she might drop the kid?

The case against Ms. Anvarinia will almost certainly be dismissed because prosecutors lack the evidence needed to try her for endangering her child. They have no evidence that she was drunk or that any alcohol was transmitted to the child. Nonetheless, the mere fact that she was accused is deeply troubling. She was not charged because she was drunk, and she was not charged because she posed a threat to her child simply by being drunk. She was charged because she was mothering (breastfeeding) while drunk, a moral "deficiency" that the officers and prosecutors decided merited the designation of "crime."

My wife’s pediatrician recommended my wife drink beer to enrich her milk.
Of course this was in the 70’s.

Consumption of huge amounts of alcohol by a nursing mother can cause problems for the baby. The most likely bad outcome is that the baby will become lethargic and not nurse as much as it should, which can result in dehydration (short term) or malnutrition (long term). I don’t think there are sufficient data available to realistically posit other damage to the baby simply from alcohol-bearing milk.

More likely harms would include, as you mentioned, dropping the baby or falling on him or exposing him to other environmental hazards - water, cold, stove, pets, boyfriends, etc. - while intoxicated.

This reminds me of what a (former Texan) friend said one time about Shiner beer --

Tastes like it's been run through a horse!

I’m not a beer drinker myself.

I’m not saying I’ve tried this, because it might be a felony, but one might reasonably assume, theoretically, that a couple of glasses of wine consumed by the mother could make Baby just sleepy enough to let a mother get through a whole 90-minute sleep cycle before she has to feed him again. Just imagining ...

So the booze does get in the milk. Yes, my little joke aside, that can’t be good for an infant.

I’d love to see the officer try to breastfeed through a nice case of mastitis without a glass of wine or three.

What an idiot.

Agreed.

This is pretty darn stupid in my never to be humbled opine.

I would hope she sues them without mercy.

Surely she can find a lawyer to trump up a reason like they trumped up the charge against her.

A little bit doesn’t hurt, while a whole lot can, just as with adult alcohol consumption. There’s a long history of giving a bottle-fed baby a little bit of (ahem) sedative with the formula, with no harm done unless the alcohol content gets quite high.

While this is probably not healthy for the baby, how long will it be before police arrest a parent for feeding the child a hot dog, Cheetos and a Dr. Pepper? That’s not healthy, you know.

Oh, that brings back bad memories! #7, back in ‘04. I was taking Tylenol to keep the fevers down, though, and you can’t mix alcohol and Tylenol.

My Frank has gained two pounds in the last three weeks!
