The overall unemployment rate currently stands at 7.2 percent, a 15-year high according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. Each day since the current recession began, in December 2007, the news has been full of reports of job layoffs. Just today the government released a report indicating that the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits is at its highest level in a quarter of a century, as more workers seek government assistance. Could the news get any worse? It’s all in how you calculate the numbers.

finally, a chart that obamabots can actually understand! I only wish the government would actually call it like it is. Didn’t the time for tough talk and laying it on the table get announced last night????

THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION: JANUARY 2009 Nonfarm payroll employment fell sharply in January (-598,000) and the unem ployment rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

The numbers may be a little off, but it shows the relationship between reality and what the gov’t tells us.
