A Liberian woman from the West Brighton section of Staten Island, charged with smuggling monkey meat, has failed to persuade a judge that she needed the butchered carcasses for religious reasons.

Mamie Manneh was arrested three years ago after customs agents seized a shipment of primate parts as it passed through Kennedy Airport on the way to her Bement Avenue home.

ridiculous ... he completely ignored the amputated birdie feet and wouldn’t even admit the all purpose porpoise pus into evidence. A travesty. And I forgot my spoon.

A Liberian woman from the West Brighton section of Staten Island [...]

Wow, I didn't know that Liberia had a West Brighton or Staten Island. But I guess that's where she's from.

But if that's where she's "from"...how are they going to deport her?

Some of the species were endangered, but Manneh's lawyers made a First Amendment claim, arguing that some Liberian Christians eat monkey meat for spiritual reasons.

Those wacky Christians!

I like the Daily News headline: Judge Cans Monkey Meat

[...] Mamie Manneh, 39, charged with concealing a shipment of 720 pounds of primate parts known as bushmeat, argued the indictment should be dismissed because eating monkey skulls and limbs brings her "closer to God."

Brooklyn Federal Judge Raymond Dearie said the Liberian-born woman could have applied for an import license if she really thought she had a right to the meat. [...]
I was going to say..."720 pounds?!?" but then I noticed that she has 9 children!

It seems that monkey meat is best eaten with rice. Rosa Henderson sang of eating monkey hips and rice in her 1924 recording “Black Star Line.” Thirty years later, the Five Royales, a rhythm amd blues group, released “Monkey Hips & Rice” on the King label.
