Lawmakers will be in a bind next year to balance the state's books, and tobacco buyers and natural gas producers may be asked to pay up.

While Gov. Ed Rendell has said he's against hiking income or sales taxes next year, he has mentioned new taxes on smokeless tobacco, cigars and natural gas production.

Smokeless tobacco and cigars are now subject to the state's 6-percent sales tax, but unlike cigarettes, are not subject to an extra excise tax. For cigarettes, the state adds a per-pack excise tax of $1.35, and Rendell has longed backed an excise tax for smokeless tobacco and cigars.

Of course, rather than reduce expenses, let’s just raise taxes. How about cutting the State’s employment? Probably run more efficiently anyway. Less jam ups at the water cooler.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but in Eddie’s defense (yuck), he’s shown some level of restraint when it has come to spending here over the past year, more restraint than all of his buddies in Washington have ever shown.

Sheeple generally don’t look at a tobacco tax as material....since it doesn’t effect many of them.

What they don’t understand is that when it has the desired effect of the anti-tobacco lobby....coercing smokers to quit...the money dries up.

Than it’s on to the next target.

Considering the treatment cigarette smokers get from most smokeless users and cigar smokers when it comes to excise taxes, all I can say is -— TOLD YOU SO.

I can think of a particular Pennsylvania anti-smoker who is a smokeless proponent I can’t wait to gloat at.........

I guess you didn’t see the part where I called “him” unspeakable names. Glad it was deleted. It was below someone even of my low caliber.

Dang, sorry I missed it.

I’m surprised Doc hasn’t deleted some of my posts, I can get pretty rough on both him and the other miscreants.

The only good side to any of this is, it doesn’t look as if he intends to sock it to cig smokers more, at least for the time being.

You’re not a guy so you don’t get this. You can call the ump/ref any name in the book but there is magic word you can’t use. Once you cross that line there is no going back.

Call him assface, stupid, blind, jerk

Just don’t ever call him a c*%&sucker. You’ll get tossed. I can’t find my comments to him.

I didn’t call him that but it was deleted anyway, I think.

The beatings will continue until either morale improves or smokers quit.
