If Obama gets elected -- Charity Strike!!! "St. Vincent de Paul Shrugged"
October 16, 2008 | Me

Posted on 10/16/2008 7:06:57 AM PDT by Liberty Ship

In the unlikely event that America actually elects a Marxist for President, I've been thinking about what an appropriate response would be.

My mind turns to "Atlas Shrugged." How about an economic warning shot?

Republicans give much, much more to charity than Democrats.

What if, should Obama be elected, we all suspend ALL charitable giving the instant the decision is announced. Keep our money for ourselves; after all, the beneficiaries of our charitable giving would have probably been the same people who elected Obama for the purpose of taking even more! They can't have it both ways, with Obama taking our stuff and giving it to them, while at the same time having us charitably give our stuff to them, too.

So, suspend all charitable giving -- no cash to charities, nothing to holiday food banks, no money in the plates at church, not even any end of the year clothes to Goodwill. Just shut it down. Let them see what it's like to have to rely on government exclusively. Strike!!! Shrug!!!!

Thoughts?

I think that scenario is likely to occur, even if it is not coordinated. The effect of having the state expand welfare is to preempt charitable private giving. That’s why its so low in places like Germany and France.

Many people here are far too compassionate to suspend all giving.

But it would behoove all of us to more closely consider all of our spending, and for charity, the recipient and the effect of our giving to that recipient, especially on the survival of ur own values.

If Obama wins it’ll probably be us down at the Food Bank.

Let’s just say that I have been giving some thought to the John Galt nuclear option. It would take some time to implement without losing everything, but I think it could be done. I like the idea of helping the beast starve.

It has to be something that the government actually feels, we need not make the needy hurt more by not giving our excess.

So in effect its a cause for a broad spectrum action that will make “Senator Government” to review his position so to speak.

What that action is to be is of course not allowed to be talked about here at FR.

No.

I work with St. Vincent DePaul. I deliver donated furniture and run food to inner city churches. Some people just fall through the safety nets and need a little temporary help. St. Vincent DePaul provides this help WITHOUT GOVERNMENT involvement.

There will be more of these under an Obama administration. Why? Because he needs more people who are needy.

If you want to strike back then hit the prominant lefty corporations (Apple, Costco, Time-Warner, etc) and anyone who advertises on MSNBC.

Dems would LOVE for this to happen.
Charitable institutions are the very thing Government has sought to displace, because it de-emphasizes religion.

If your going to strike or boycott anything, it should be those who support the liberal MSM.
The MSM just loves it when you protest them.... it helps ratings, and they can spin your protest any way they want.
BUT... if we start boycotting their sponsors, and giving the companies responsible for their paychecks hell, well, MSM just might take notice.

As for the United Socialist States of America, the only solution is to accelerate the normal process of dis-investments. We the people have the true power of the purse-string. We dont HAVE to make 250,000 if we dont want to. We dont HAVE to invest our money in US businesses.
It would be best in my opinion to LEGALLY do everything possible to minimize the amount of our money that the FEDERAL government receives. This will happen anyway when big business start looking overseas.

Let us LEGALLY De-Fund the federal government.

My charitable giving mostly goes to my church and the Salvation Army. I doubt they would do anything to help Obama’s campaign, and they certainly wouldn’t benefit from his efforts to ‘spread the wealth.’

Liberty Ship, I’ve thought long and hard about doing the exact thing you are suggesting, because my husband and I have worked hard, saved our money, done without, and for what? To bail out a bunch of greedy deadbeats?

The problem is, The Lord’s Prayer asks that God “forgive us our trepasses as we forgive those who trepass against us”, and, furthermore “to lead us not into temptation”. Yeah, these people are trepassing against us, and the temptation is to do as you suggest, shut the pocketbook. To remain true to my Christian ideals, and in striving to be the person God would like me to be, I’m going to turn the other cheek once again.

Freely giving is not the same as having something forcefully taken from you, so don’t take this post as some namby-pamby wuss. I will protect what is mine when push comes to shove.

People should seriously think about how they will shun and avoid participation in the leftist utopia.

Withholding money from charities in my opinion would be feeding the beast, i.e. increase revenues to the federal government by reducing deductions. I think our forefathers laid everything on the line for our freedoms. Their homes, financial security, and lives were put at risk. If Obama is elected and pursues socialistic policies, I think those Americans that cherish freedom should be prepared to practice passive resistance to stop the socialism. A “Stop Socialism Now” movement would encourage Americans to stop buying large ticket items, withdraw their money from banks, refuse to invest in the US stock market, avoid taxes by maximizing existing deductions, etc. One consequence of the class warfare that has been waged in this country by democrats is the concentration of power among those that pay the tax bill. The persons at the lower end of the economic ladder no longer have a vested interest in keep income taxes low, they don’t pay any income taxes and will now receive welfare in the form of refundable tax credits. It is quickly approaching the time when the minority that picks up the tab says enough is enough. It probably can’t be done at the ballot box, we are the minority. If the economy is brought to its knees, so be it.

Was considering the same thing. Do they KNOW how much conservatives/Republicans and I might add, Christians, give to charities? Everything from supporting the troops, to Boy Scouts, to volunteering in hospitals, to well, you name it, we’re there. We voluntarily give aid to foreign countries. Above and beyond in most cases.

Except for church and our military, I will NOT give another penny to an organization asking for money from my pocket. I’m going to actually tell them to “ask President Obama” he is the one “spreading the wealth around.”

If you have a “liberal” relative, like I do, who you are supporting in some way, STOP. Tell them to get their money from Obama.

No. In the battle of good against evil, we need to support good and stop supporting evil. We cannot, for example, stop funding the Boy Scouts of America. We cannot shut down my church's soup kitchen. Right now, there are a number of people who count on Christians to give them a warm meal every night. I'd rather have them trust in Christian charity than have them go to Obama [I know - he claims to be a Christian too, and we can check with Rev. Wright if we have questions] for a handout that they are "entitled to". There are a number of other great charities that still need and deserve our donations, and I hope Freepers have been supporting those causes and will continue to do so.

There is one option we have that is far better than your suggestion - stop feeding the beast. Okay, Obama says he's going to "redistribute more equitably" whatever we make beyond $250k? Fine. When you get to $250k, stop working for the remainder of the year. Let Obama find the taxable income he needs for his redistribution scheme from those who are done working. Joe the Plumber can give his (Obama voting?) workers the rest of the year off, "sorry guys, but you need to find something else to do - Obama says he gets the rest of my earnings if I work more, and I don't see a reason to sweat, strain my back, and crawl through unpleasant backups to fund his 'change' for those who wouldn't be willing to work as hard as us." Doctors can postpone all elective procedures, "nope, I'm working for free if I do that before January, and if I'm not allowed to keep what I earn, I'd rather be outdoors, it's deer season and I'd also like to do some fly fishing."

I agree with you, Safrguns. Plus, I donate to certain “conservative” 503C organizations (e.g., Pacific Legal Foundation, Gun Owners Foundation, etc.) that will continue the fight even if Obama wins...

Unfortunately, the end result of defunding the government is also precisely something the socialists want... because that would force the dollar down to a point where we would have to accept the Euro... which of course brings us closer to that new world order stuff. Yeah... This is a Lose-Lose for USA if Obama wins... no matter what we do, we are still destined to go broke. Oh... and where would the impact be felt first?... inner cities, high population centers, anywhere that government programs have the most influence. The only silver lining I see is an eventual mass exodus from these areas like New York and California to escape the poverty.
The bible belt will become the refuge.
