"She was wearing peace symbol earrings in an interview with Costas. "

I saw them too. She had them on again last night when interviewed on the floor during the closing ceremony. I cheered her on during the Olympics. She and the rest of the girls represented the USA proudly. The kid is only 16 and hasn't even started experiencing life, and I won't judge her based on the earrings she chooses to wear. I think I wore peace symbol items in the 60's, despite the fact that I supported the war in Vietnam, and my brother was a Vietnam vet. Maybe it's a fashion thing for her. I'm sure that's all it was for me, because frankly, I don't think I even understood the significance of it at the time.

My father came from Europe and was a naturalized citizen. He worked for NY Central RR, belonged to the rail union, and was a registered Democrat. My mother was born in Canada, came over here as a small child and never became a citizen. Voting Democrat was expected of us kids once we reached 21. I voted for Dems until Reagan ran, and I haven't looked back since. Perhaps Shawn Johnson is only at the convention because she represented the U.S. at the Olympics and won several medals. It will be interesting to see if she wears those earrings. If her family is Democrat, hopefully the kid will learn to see things differently once she's out in the real world.

I don’t have a problem with it. Most people don’t give a crap about the convention. They probably made the offer to the agent. The agent thought..more exposure could be good for more endorsements and so there you go. She’s 16 and has been wrapped up in gymnastics. I doubt she considers the political issues of the modern day.

I pointed that out in the other thread on Shawn Johnson at the Olympics and said the same thing about it being nothing but a slap at Bush because to idiots like her Bush is the ‘warmonger’, not China or Russia or the terrorists-it’s all just Bush’s fault and it was obvious that was a political statement and can’t say I’m surprised she’s openly campaigning for Obama now. She was a pushover to Chinese cheating as well, saying how it wasn’t their fault-I mean, what are rules for? And flashing the peace sign after her balance beam routine. Peaceniks only cause more bloodshed and always have because they never direct the demands for peace at the real culprits of war and murder.

There was Shawn Johnson in CHINA, for Godsakes, and who was she directing that peace sign at?! I lost respect for her when I saw that interview and her continuing to wear them afterwards. She should have preached peace to the Chicoms and the Ruskies, but like all liberals it is directed to those who love this country and want to protect at home. Yes, I am questioning the patriotism when they look at China and Russia and claim President Bush is to blame for the world troubles!

Remember, this is the same Demonrat party that has ‘celebrated’ leaders like the Reverend Jessie Jackson(adultery and child while married) and Reverend Al Sharpton(false witness against thy white neighbors). They are the religion of hate and lies.

I think this is a case of the DNC exploiting a wholesome All-American girl from the Midwest to counter their well deserved reputation for being bitter, unwashed America haters. She is a young idealistic girl with naive notions of peace.(Hey who isn't for peace right?)Her appearance at the DNC convention is probably more about exposure than making a political statement. I saw footage of Johnson's homecoming and the announcer told the crowd that Johnson would be doing the pledge at the DNC convention. This was met with dead silence from the previously boisterous crowd. The announcer felt compelled to say “Hey it's an honor. She's 16 it isn't a political statement.”

I agree. I don’t believe for a moment that those peace earrings were meant for the Chinese. Shawn doesn’t have any idea of Mao’s slaughter of thirty million of his own citizens.

Give her time. She is sixteen. Few kids that age have thought through their own worldviews. Most just either parrot back what parents or teachers say or blindly oppose what parents or teachers say. Hopefully this misguided girl figures it out as she becomes a grownup.
