Anita Creamer: America finally has an Oprah overload
Sacramento Bee ^ | 5/30/8 | Anita Creamer

Uh-oh. A bit of trouble in Oprah Winfrey's $2.5 billion multimedia universe.

Although her show remains the country's top-rated daytime TV program, her audience has dropped for the third year in a row. At the same time, the circulation for O, The Oprah Magazine, has fallen by more than 10 percent.

Along with the decline of the American empire, are we also experiencing the gradual death of the age of Oprah?

As comedian Kathy Griffin fondly (or fondly enough) likes to say: "Oprah thinks she's Jesus." Sooner or later, that quality was bound to grate on someone other than your snarkier lifestyle columnists and TV critics.

Has America finally had it up to here with Oprah?

Attitudes have shifted. Outright Oprah worship – an affliction once common among suburban women, who in previous years took to writing gratitude journals and reading an array of frequently bad fiction, all because Oprah told them to – seems to have diminished markedly.

While a Gallup poll in early 2007 showed that 74 percent of Americans viewed Oprah favorably, a similar survey taken at year's end showed that the part of the public that views her favorably had dipped to 55 percent.

The problem, it seems, is that Oprah rocked a whole lot of people's worlds, and not in a good way, when she endorsed Barack Obama's presidential candidacy.

A Los Angeles Times blog item to that effect in early April generated hundreds of angry responses, varying from "Oprah's sold out" to "The white women finally got it! Oprah is black!" to "Oprah is a new age racist who is full of herself. Period."

Any number of posters were upset that for her first political endorsement, Oprah ignored the country's first serious presidential bid by a woman.

I don't like watching Oprah at all, but really get a headache from Kathy Griffin. If Griffin is funny, then I'm an astronaut, and I don't like to fly! Her brand of so-called humor belongs in a cess pool along with her sexual innuendos. Arrggghhhhhh!

Are you talking about the article itself or the author’s name?

"........her audience has dropped for the third year in a row."

Three years ago is when she slicked her hair back and went to New Orleans to show that she felt their pain.

I have always marveled at the ego that would be required to name a magazine after oneself and put oneself on the cover every single month. I am also amazed that people buy it.

so some women are mad at Oprah for endorsing Obama, instead of the first serious woman presidential candidate?

I’ve never thought Hillary is a real woman candidate anyway. She’s an appendage of Bill Clinton. She’s only there because of Bill Clinton. How does electing a former president’s wife somehow shatter the “glass ceiling” the feminists love to talk about?

Back in the day (pre 2004 or so), I always though a day off from work wasn’t a good day off without catching something on daytime TV. Oprah was the preferred choice.

She has changed the format and for the most part subject matter. There is a lot of “Look at me, look at my stuff, look at the rabbits my staff can pull out of hats on short notice, look at the celebrities I am friends with.” That is not entertaining, let alone inspiring.

In March, she had a two part episode on hoarding stuff that almost seemed old school. Just the right combo of human failure, drama, and self improvement tips to get anyone to clean a closet. If she would go back those types of shows people would go back to watching.

The Oprah and Barry dynamics are truly interesting and this author seems to have missed the point. Oprah is truly a success and she has accomplishments in her field. Barry ain’t never did nothing except hang around looking for someone who could do him some good. Geraldine Ferraro pegged him, he is a nobody save for the color of his skin. To Oprah’s credit she did what Barry should have done, and she left that crazy Uncle Jeremiah knowing that ultimately a close association with a hate spewing demagogue could do her no good. Ironically, Oprah got what Barry need, and that is all those white women, but ultimately white folk much different than black folk. If you can get fifty per cent of the black folk that other 40 or so per cent just follow along as if voting is some kind of music or fashion statement. Oprah cannot deliver the white women soccer mom crowd and as this author points it may have cost her that she even tried to deliver in in the first place.

I don’t particularly care for any woman comedian (sorry, I just don’t find women to be all that funny). But Griffin is one of the most annoying and disgusting “comedians” I’ve seen.
