SAN FRANCISCO -- A pickup truck struck and killed a 35-year-old bicycle messenger today next to Alamo Square, San Francisco police said.
The accident happened at 10:55 a.m. at Fulton and Steiner streets at the northeast corner of the square. The bicycle messenger was a San Francisco man whose name has not yet been released.
The bicyclist was headed east on Fulton toward downtown in a bike lane when the pickup driver, headed north on Steiner, struck him in the intersection,

And don't even try to guess the gender of a messenger without a DNA test.
Apparently pickup trucks are starting to go feral just like SUVs. Didn’t mention a driver until paragraph three, and no name or even a mention if he was detained or anything. All the truck’s fault.
Could easily have been avoided if the guy knew how to ride and handle a bike. He didn’t even have to wear a helmet!
Just know how to handle a bike.
This is one of thousands of traffic accidents that our every day.
Why is this newsworthy here?
“Williams said it is unclear who had the right of way at the intersection, which is controlled by signal lights.”
What percent of bike messengers run lights and what percentage of delivery drivers run lights?
“Why is this newsworthy here?”
because it was a pickup
I was going to post it in breaking news, but I was able to get you to respond without resorting to that.
; )
I expect that any minute now a Pray-A-Thon thread will be started for the unfortunate bike messenger, just like the prayer threads for Senator Whatsisname in the past couple of days.
This is one Obama voter who’s gonna hafta cast his ballot from the Great Beyond. One more Obama voter, voting from the Great Beyond, that is.
Oh yeah, he’s an Obama voter.
It's pretty close to 100% for each. But given that the bike rider is a lot more exposed, one would think they would exercise a little caution.
I wonder if it was Puck from the Real World?
god...i was in that neighborhood today just a few minutes before the accident. prayers for the poor courier.
I’ve been hit by bicyclists, especially during Critical Mass anarchist protests, but I’ve never been hit by a delivery truck driver.
And the bicyclists knew they were in the wrong and took off. No plate I could report for “hit and run”.
I rarely see bicyclists stop for stop signs and I never see them wait through a red light when the traffic is clear on the cross street (although they do stop at lights).
Critical Mass riders ignore the lights and laws completely. And they teach their children to ride at night and mock those with cars.
If they are going to want to play equal to cars, they need to learn to obey the frickin rules of the road.
“Steiner street” brings back some old memories. Back in the day, 1950, one of the first series on TV was called “I Remember Mama,” about an immigrant family from Norway, living on that street. Any other geezers out there remember that show?
There was a worse accident last week, if you could call it worse. A semi “rear ended” a motorcycle. Which in less PC speech means the semi ran over the motorcycle and the rider. The rider died the same day.
I remember the show, but it was around 53 or 54. (I was about 9 years old)
We were both right, ed. I went to fiftiesweb.com.
They say that “I Remember Mama” debuted on 7/1/1949 and ran throguh to 3/17/57. I watched it on a 12” screen in a Philco console about the size of a modern washing machine.
