Excerpt -

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor James Garner, best known for starring in the classic television series "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files," underwent surgery this week after suffering a minor stroke, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Garner, 80, who built a six-decade career playing ruggedly charming, good-natured anti-heroes, suffered a stroke at home last Friday and was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital, publicist Jennifer Allen said.

The actor underwent surgery on Sunday, and his prognosis following the operation was described as "very positive," Allen said, adding that Garner's vital signs were good and that he was conscious and "responsive."

Garner is a Korean war vet. Who knows, he may even hold to some conservative values. If such a thing is possible in the Commiewood crowd.

For some reason there’s one line of his from Rockford I remember most fondly. He had gotten beaten up, as usual, and as people kept asking him what happened to him, he gave a different answer each time. In one case he responded very sincerely, and as though greatly disgusted with himself, “Awww, I went fishing and I fell off the pier.” ... I’m laughing now just thinking of it.

He is one of my all time favorites. His Rockford shows with the weasely Angel Martin were always some of my favorites, and the casting of Noah Beery, Jr. as his dad was perfection. I also really liked the show(s) where Tom Selleck played Lance White, another PI.

Wikipedia :

Garner is a strong Democratic Party supporter, contributing over $7500 to Democrats running for Federal office the past seven years, including Dennis Kucinich (for Congress in 2002), Richard Gephardt, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, and various Democratic committees and groups. Since 1982 Garner has given at least $29,000 to Federal campaigns, and over $24,000 of that has been to the Democrats.[16] For his role in the 1985 CBS miniseries Space, the character’s party affiliation was changed from a Republican (as in the book) to reflect Garner’s personal views. Prior to the entry of ex-San Francisco Mayor (later U.S. Senator) Dianne Feinstein, there was an effort by party leaders to persuade James Garner to seek the 1990

Sorry, he's a "liberal" (but not a hard-core lefty). However, he conducts himself with class and dignity, and doesn't try to shove his politics down everyone's throat, so he's cool by me.

My favorite line of his: "I'm just on my way to Australia..."... /grin

I hate to hear about this and hope he’ll be OK. I loved him in the Rockford Files. Liked his ‘dad’ in that series too.

I've always dug the Rockford Files theme song. Perfect song for the low-rent private eye.
