I've looked at the State of Georgia website and can't find this info. I know FReepers can help me. :^)
I need to know how a person establishes residency in Georgia.
Let me tell you my story. I'm trying to verify this for a relative of mine. This relative lives less than a mile from Georgia but has always been a resident of Tennesee (drivers license, mortgage, property taxes, etc).
However they have a post office box just on the other side of the state line in Georgia. They've been told that because the post office box is located in Georgia they have to pay taxes to Georgia.
Is this true? Whom can I email or phone to verify this?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
I had to switch my voter registration, my driver’s license, and my car insurance to Georgia from Florida to be considered a Georgia resident for my UGA scholarship.
Many people have PO Boxes in states other than where they reside. I have some Canadian friends that live near the US border that have US PO Boxes. When they drive up the the US border, they tell the border agent they are going to get their mail, and are waved through.
Does your relative work in GA?

Post offices require a street address in that state to get a P O Box, so if they filed an address in GA that wasn’t theirs, then they have two addresses, one legal in TN and one illegal in GA.
If they live in TN they should drop the GA P O Box, and call the Georgia Secretary of State office, or visit their website for more information on how to drop the GA address.
One must live in that state to get a PO Box, or at least that’s the Federal law, as I was told.
