HELP!!!!!
My cable modem at my house is giving me fits. It went out on Monday. Called Time Warner and they could not schedule me for a house call till next Wednesday. So I decided to swap modems to see if the modem was the problem. That wasn't the case as the new one did not work either. I plugged a TV into the cable outlet where my Cable Modem is hooked up, and it got a good picture. But still no inbound cable signal on the modem.
I can't wait till Wednesday for Time Warner to come out. They "say" their is nothing wrong with their network in my area. So, if that's the case, is their anything I can get at Radio Shack that could be used to boost my signal from my cable box on the house to my cable modem. My cable modem wire is not part of the pre wire in the house as I had it directly tied into the box of the house which goes to the utility box in the utility easement behing my home.
I have a Sprint USB card for my laptop, but I rather be using my Mac.
Any help or insight would be appreciated.
Did you make sure you called up Time Warner so they could activate the new modem?
You can’t simply plug in a different modem on a whim and see if it works the Cable Co. has to activate it.
Yes, it was their modem I switched it out for. I called them after I pluged it in and they sent the test signal and still could not pic up my modem.
I’m confused when they say that because I had no problem getting the cable TV reception thru the same outlet.
Try also posting your question at the Bleeping Computer forum. Those guys are usually pretty helpful.
you have FR mail maybe I can help
Assuming you have rebooted both the computer and modem...
Using WinXP?
If so, START button >> Settings >> Network Connections
Select Local Area Network. Right click on Local Area Networks and select Repair.
See if that solves your problem.
Well then I am betting you have a signal loss somewhere, are you sure that same line isnt being shared with a tv or two? Quite possibly you may have your cable box outside the house changed by the cable co or they route you a new cable from it.
Don’t think that will change anything, he says the cable co. doesnt get a hit on the box meaning somwhere there is a signal loss before it gets to it. The computer will have nothing to do with that.
I run a Mac off my cable modem. You don’t have to do that Windows stuff with a Mac......
I know, I’m a Mac snob.....
“Well then I am betting you have a signal loss somewhere, are you sure that same line isnt being shared with a tv or two? Quite possibly you may have your cable box outside the house changed by the cable co or they route you a new cable from it.”
Probably. I had a new cable drop installed to a room that we converted to a home office and the guy that wired it, did not wire it thru the cable pre wire in the house. He bypassed it and ran the wire directly to the box on the house.
Shouldnt have to do that with a Windows machine either, it should be plug and go. Unless somebody got in and tinkered with the guts of Windows then you have to play with ip settings and stuff. But that isnt your case because of the fact the cable co. cant get a hit either.
You may have a bad connector either at the beginning or at the end of your new cable run. Or even a defective cable.
If neither of these possibilities is at the root of your problem, then you might try installing a two-way amplifier, to boost the signals both “to” and “from” the modem.
After much frustration and tearing of hair, when the cable guy finally came to check on my problem, it turned out rats were gnawing on the cables in the box on the street. Rats!
A number of questions here...
First off, are you using some sort of router, like a Linksys or Netgear behind the cable modem?
Secondly, what lights are on the cable modem? What color are they, and are they on, off, or flashing?
Thirdly, what OS are you using? And what sort of connection do you have, wired or wireless?
Thanks!
Mark
It’s fixed as of Friday night.
As I sort of suspected ,but TW kept on telling me I was wrong, it was TW’s system. My neighbors were down also from my house down the line, so it was something with their box.
Thanks for the tips and offers of help.
I’ve had similar problems with Time Warner.
I had all sorts of problems getting them to come out and bury my cable. As of right now, it’s actually just running along the top of my fence!
The last time I had a problem, they insisted that I had to be there when they sent their tech so they could eliminate my home network as the source of my problem. I tried to calmly tell them that not only didn’t I have any high speed Internet, but I didn’t have any cable TV either. And the problem was that they hadn’t buried the cable, and it had been run over by my lawn service, completely cutting the cable!
