Photoshop CS2 on Linux: Just the Beginning

The Wine team has recently announced that Adobe Photoshop CS2 works under Wine, a program to enable Windows programs to run on Linux. (Softpedia news article) Although Photoshop CS2 on Wine may not be perfect yet, it may well be soon, potentially opening Linux up to many people who rely on Photoshop. CS2 is one version back from the current version, but it has not been long since CS3 was released, so it is likely that most users are still on CS2. While it is great that Photoshop CS2 works, this is just the beginning.

Adobe’s applications, ranging from pro photo management, to web design, to video, are widely used by many, many people, including web designers (of course, I use GIMP and it works just fine), photographers, graphics people, videographers, and so on. One application might not enable many of these people to use Linux, but as time goes by and the Wine team makes it possible to use more and more of these applications, many people who have been tied to Windows will suddenly be cut free and able to choose Linux.

This doesn’t jive with the constant “GIMP is better than Photoshop” chatter I hear.

GIMP is an awesome piece of software, unless you are a professional designer. Then Photoshop is the only game in town.

Ive seen little if any chatter that GIMP is better in terms of capability. About Gimp:

Not that great if you are professional publisher for years (and maybe still (I have not used it in some time) it did not support CYMK.

Gimp does serve all the needs for a vast majority of the people who need an image editor. And given the price (free) for those people GIMP is better because of the price vs needed functionality.

But If youre going to run a print shop I would not do so on gimp.. Better is very *very* subjective..

I seriously have seen plenty of people try to push the idea that GIMP is equivalent or superior to Photoshop.

GIMP is at best the equivalent of Paint.net.

Naa gimp is actually pretty powerful and I know many web developers who can do allot more with gimp than paint.net. It just lacks the power of print..

I've used both, and as a current Linux only user, I would love for that to be true, but it isn't.

Still, for most people's needs, GIMP is a damn good program, and is a good substitute for Photoshop.
