Senate President Richard Codey said yesterday he has introduced a bill to require drivers to decide whether they want to become donors before they can obtain or renew their license.

The "New Jersey Hero Act" also would make New Jersey the first state in the nation to incorporate organ donation education into the high school curriculum beginning in the 2008-09 school year.

"For the first time anywhere in this country, we are mandating a discussion -- one that can and will save lives and make everyone a hero," said Codey (D-Essex).

NY/NJ recently lost their underground body broker’s business too.

I have decided that I will no longer be a donor unless they agree to compensate my family for my organs.

The doctor, the hospital, the ambulance carrying my organs and even the insurance company will make money off my organs but they won't consider paying my family for them.

That is an excellent point. I always assumed if I donated my organs, that they were 'donated'. Only the passed few years of compiling the body broker threads at FR have I learned the money that has been made, ethically and unethically.

Yeeoouuwch!!!!!!

"Bodybrokers" is a good term. It's amazing that we have been indoctrinated into believing that donating an organ is a "totally" benevolent thing and yet the average transplant operation involves hundred of thousands of dollars changing hands.

Come to think of it I would include a yearly percentage of the anti-rejection drugs used to keep my organs alive.

>>>We’re here for your liver.

That may not be as off as you think. In these keyworded threads, there are stories about a controversial face transplant. There were two articles that suggested the donor match was found on the organ donor database; but the woman wasn't dead when they found the match. Those threads got very hot and a lot of threads were pulled. Whether there was any truth or not about how that organ donor was found, the suggestion does make one wonder since there is an uneasy underground of body brokers.

This thread will give you an idea of the monies involved. There is an old price list on it that says how much money organs can fetch. Just to give a market value.

VANITY: Why I Choose Not to Designate Myself as an Organ Donor ^

Interesting stuff on that thread. I am glad that some are starting to see the light about the sanctity of their body. Still, many others still believe that a donated organ is "freely" given.

I’m currently thinking the same this that the Cuban posted. The concept, organ donation, is a worthy cause. But, I no longer have trust in the system. I may be changing my status to no for organ donation. The system is broken and needs to be fixed.

What with all I’m hearing about NJ, I’m beginning to consider myself more and more fortunate to live in NYS.

That’s bad. Never thought I’d see the day.....

My Dad moved us all to New Jersey many years ago for a few reasons. The most important one was to get away from what he felt was the decaying of New York City. I'm afraid you're right, Metmom, New Jersey has sunk further than he would have ever imagined.
