NYC Doorman Suspended For Having Bad Breath

Company Tells Employee They Can 'No Longer Tolerate' His 'Severe Breath Odor'

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Opening the door to the Gracie Garden Apartments, a four-story building on E. 89th Street, and greeting tenants is what 60-year-old Jonah Seeman lives for.

"I just say, 'Good morning, have a nice day, smile, feel good, don't worry about anything,'" Seeman told CBS 2 HD.

But despite being very popular among the building's residents, Seeman was suspended from his job as doorman for one day, without pay, for having bad breath.

"It's embarrassing," Seeman told CBS 2 HD. "It hurt my feelings."

According to a letter from management, Seeman was sent home two other times for the same smelly reasons, but he denies that's why he went home. Then on Nov. 21, Seeman received a letter from Cooper Square Realty that read: "We can no longer tolerate the fact that you frequently have severe breath odor while on duty, that is bad breath."

"I was absolutely mystified," he said. "What are you putting me through? It's the holiday season."

Seemen, a Brooklyn resident who supports his 81-year-old mother, says he is now avoiding food with onions and garlic, and he brushes his teeth and gargles with mouthwash everyday.

"I use mints at work, I have mouthwash, I wear cologne, I have deodorant," he says.

Some residents at the building say they have noticed Seeman's breath, but others say they haven't. They all agree he is a nice man and a great doorman.

"He's a sweetheart. He's a wonderful, wonderful man," said resident Stephen Sholinsky. "He'd do anything for you and you can count on him for anything."

Meanwhile, Seeman has filed a complaint with his union and is looking forward to going back to work tomorrow.

He should see his doctor. Bad breath can indicate any number of health issues, including diabetes.

I feel sorry for Mr. Seeman and I agree he should definitely see his dentist and/or doctor because he could have a respiratory infection.

I hope his health is okay and maybe his problem is just that he mixes too many scents.

"I use mints at work, I have mouthwash, I wear cologne, I have deodorant," he says.

It's Tip Season for Doormen so I hope he gets to stay on the job. Those guys do very well this time of year.

Good tip. And he should see his dentist also.

“and he brushes his teeth and gargles with mouthwash everyday.” He wasn’t doing this before?

Many people with really bad breath never seem to realize it.

I’ve known 2 friends or acquaintances who had breath that would make you barf and they always seemed to want to get close to talk. I had to be subtle about moving away and out of range.

A dental resident that used to take call in the ER where I once worked would,as he was leaving at the end of his shift, announce to us all “remember, halitosis is better than no breath at all”.

There are several things that can cause it. Definitely needs to see a doctor.

How’ve you been, MG?

He’s just a regular, normal, working class, non-minority kid of guy. They can do or say anything they want to or about him and he has absolutely no recourse. He has to take whatever they feel like dishing out. Now, if he were an illegal alien named Mohammed who refused to help the residents carry in a bag because it might have a strip of bacon in it...

I remember you posted this to me and I forgot to reply.

I'm doing good. How about you? Are you and Hoodlum91 getting ready for Christmas? Hope you two have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2008! :)

I'm going to have a nice Christmas; the Packers are having a great season and that's all I really ever want for Christmas :)

We’re getting ready! Spending Christmas in Massachusetts with her parents, then going to Ohio to my parents’ for New Year’s.

I’m thrilled that the Browns are doing extremely well this season.
