Missouri - fresh of Saturdays 36-28 victory over Kansas in Kansas City on Saturday night - had been voted No. 1 football team in the nation in the Associated Press Top 25.
And soon after the MU basketball teams 91-52 blowout of Western Illinois on Sunday, Missouri was announced No. 1 in the all-important BCS standings.

Everyone in Columbia seemed to be grinning Sunday over the football teams first No. 1 ranking since 1960, a ranking the Tigers held for one week before being upset by Kansas.
MU was ranked No. 2 by the USA Today/Coaches poll, but just 13 points behind West Virginia, the coaches top pick.

If MU and West Virginia can hold those BCS rankings one more week, they will meet in the national championship game in New Orleans the first week of January.
Missouri would have to beat Oklahoma - the only team to defeat MU in its 11-1 season

Props to Coach Pinkel...who was Offensive Coordinator at Washington when my brother played there, and had a hand in recruiting me to play there.
Pinkel was interviewed by then AD Barbara Hedges to become HC at Washington in the late 90s (when he was at Toledo), but she wanted to make her own mark on the program and went and hired Rick Neuheisel. (And look at how far we have fallen since)
You are correct. Kansas did not play a particularly tough schedule. Missouri was their toughest opponent this year.
I wasn’t at all believing that that they were the legitimate #2 team.
But they did play credibly and I’m sorry that they lost. They will receive a very nice bowl bid and in the long run, this year will only help their recruiting efforts.
Kansas has been building up to this for several years now. Two years ago, they got a surprise invite to the PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl where they beat up on a supposedly better Houston team.
Step by step, Mangino and his staff seem to be doing it all just fine.
And then you would have the number 17 team moaning because they were left out.
I still think the best thing to do is divide all teams into 16 conferences of 16 teams. Let each conference be divided into two divisions with a one game League Conference championship game.
From there, you would have a 16 team 'Tournament of Champions'.
Polls would be eliminated from a roll in determining the champion.
Sorry, there will be no tournament. End of discussion.
Agreed.....
When Mangino left OU...I figured if given enough time...he could mold/build a winner.
Congrats to KU....for sure.
My family & I went to Norman earlier this year and saw our first match up. We told the folk in Norman, we'll see you again this year.
I'm expecting to come out on top this game.

I absolutely agree.
By the way, congrats on your thorough pounding of my UConn Huskies the other day. We were absolutely humiliated...although we did score first, if that counts for anything ;-)
While my UConn Huskies went down in the flames of defeat, even though we did score up to 21, the fact that a Big East program is in the number 2 position will at last will end all the questions of the Big East being a true football conference. :)
UCONN had me worried. I thought we could get by Cincy and Pitt has had some serious problems the last couple of years bu you had me (and most WVU fans) worried.
I do not like to see a team get steamrolled like that but WVU had to make a statement to the BCS. I think we need to make another statement next week.
I do not trust the BCS.
It would definately be interesting if the Top 16 BCS teams were in a playoff, I could see a team from the middle of the pack (*ahem* Florida) winning the championship under such a scenario.
When I have watched the game of UConn vs. WV, the Mountaineers are a really fast team. Also they have perfected the “spread offense” in order to defeat the other teams. Do not be suprised if the NFL is going to take a close look at both the juniors and seniors for draft consideration down the road.

Thank-you for commenting about not liking an opposing football team getting steamrolled, but WVU was dealing with the very high expectations of the BCS, which I do not like the present BCS system.
Here is a thread about changing the BCS system.

Screw rankings, they're political anyway, just have the conference champs in a play-off. Three weeks tops.
There needs to be more symmetry in college football. Every team should play the same # of games. No way OSU deserves the championship game.
That is why I have been promoting the idea of having a bracket system in place for the college football the way they do it for the basketball.
Yep, 6 BCS conference champions and 2 at large. Eight team playoff and it would only take 3 weekends to decide the champion. But you know, the best team/player does not always win the championship in any sport.
>>And then you would have the number 17 team moaning because they were left out.<<
True, but there is a HUGE difference between number 17 complaining and number 3 complaining. If number 3 should really be number 2, then that’s a potential national championship they don’t win. If number 17 should really be number 16, then that’s likely a first or, at best, second round playoff finish they don’t get.
16 seeds have never won an NCAA basketball tournament game. I’m not saying that equates to football, but it will be a long time before a ‘teen seed would win in football under a playoff system.
I do, however, think your idea about the leagues has merit.
