Lincoln (KPTM) - University of Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson has been asked to resign his post.
The University of Nebraska Chancellor's office tells KPTM FOX 42 News that Chancellor Harvey Perlman has asked Pederson to step down.
A source close to the program tells KPTM FOX 42 News that Tom Osborne may be named interim Athletic Director. Sources also tell us that Dave Remington, a former NU offensive lineman, will be named to the football coaching staff.
In Monday afternoon's press conference, Perlman said that no interim Athletic Director has been named at this point. Perlman says that former head coach Tom Osborne could be considered for the interim position, but does plan to talk to Osborne about the position.
In a release sent out this afternoon, Perlman says, "We are of course disappointed about the progress in our football program. Steve has done many positive things for Husker athletics during his tenure, but I think only new leadership can objectively assess the state of our program and make the decisions necessary to move us forward."
Pederson was hired as athletic director in December of 2002. He came under heavy fire from Husker fans for hiring Bill Callahan, who did away with the Huskers' traditional running attack and replaced it with the west coast offense.
Perlman says his decision was not made lightly. "I know Steve made the decisions he thought best for the interests of the program and University. I am disappointed that I had to come to this decision," he says.
A press conference is planned for 4 p.m. We will have much more on this developing story on the news at 4 and 4:30.

Damn, I was hoping the would bring back Lawrence Phillips to be the new AD.
Which team are you a fan of? Missouri? Well enjoy these past few years as booster have reportedly conjured up millions upon millions to buy out contracts and pay off debts and are now being rumored to be actively mending fences with Bo Pelini.
False alarm.
Harvey Perlman, the chancellor of Nebraska, did not announce an interim athletic director at his press conference. However, he did fire Steve Pedersen.
The interim athletic director, though, was going to be given ‘full power’ of the position, ie...whomever it is will be allowed to fire the current coaching staff if need be.
Texas.
AS bad as the Horns are this year, they will stomp the Huskers again in Austin.
I have already marked off the rest of the teams on the schedule as losses, but will be pleasantly surprised if by some miracle we win one along the way.
D*mn.
I was hoping the Cornie’s would not do anything prior to the A&M game. 8<)
What about his congressional seat?
This is the same guy that kept all the criminals on his teams.
Except for the horrible, horrible mistake with Lawrence Phillips, Dr. Tom is one of the good guys of College sports. I can’t explain that one away for him, but this is good news for Nebraska if it’s true.
ANd you support Oklahoma? LOL@your hypocracy..
How dare you speak negatively against my beloved Sooners.
Young men innocent as the fresh driven snow of an Oklahoma instant Blue Norther.
Mer boys able to leap tall buildings, stop a speeding train or take a bullet for the Gipper in a drive by.
