Overweight pet dog: haf of dogs and cats in Britain are overweight Excess weight can affect a pet's quality of life and lead to a variety of ailments
Joe Inglis, a television vet who joined the charity to launch the Pets Get Slim website and roadshow yesterday, said: "Action needs to be taken.
"A weight problem can affect a pet's quality of life and lead to straining of the joints, as well as internal illnesses like diabetes, liver disease and heart disease."
He said www.petsgetslim.co.uk would give pet owners help and motivation. "We know diets are difficult and when you've got a pet begging for treats, it's really tough," he added.
Owners can post photos of their pets, share weight loss tales and the animals can be voted "pet slimmer of the week".
Roadshows will be held in Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester this week, where visitors can have their animals weighed and discover their pet's ideal weight.

The nannystaters want to crack down on pets overeating too. Get those dogs on veggie diets.
We had a cinnamon tabby who was overweight most of his life. Nothing we did ever seemed to bring his weight down. He finally died at age 11 from congestive heart failure. Very sad, he was such a sweetheart, I cannot ever remember him ever hissing a single time his whole life.
G.G. is very bad with food. She’s first at the bowl, at every bowl, and she has really ballooned out! She doesn’t get treats but she does get table scraps along with the others, who are skinny. It’d be hard to deny her when the others are all munching away. Must send her to Kitty Fat Camp.
