Star Wars duo 'least convincing'
BBC ^ | August 19, 2007

Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen
The pair played Senator Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker

Star Wars couple Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen have been voted as having the least plausible on-screen chemistry by film fans.

The pair beat Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez for their performance in Gigli into second place, which was made when they were a real life couple.

Former duo Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman also made the list with Eyes Wide Shut.

British pairing Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom were thought "too stiff upper lip" in Pirates of the Caribbean.

The 3,000 movie-goers who were surveyed for Pearl and Dean said their screen relationship was punctuated with too much old-fashioned romance and "not enough lust".

LEAST CONVINCING SCREEN PARTNERSHIPS

1 Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

2 Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez - Gigli

3 Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom - Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy

4 Madonna and Adriano Giannini - Swept Away

5 Catherine Zeta Jones and Sir Sean Connery - Entrapment

Catherine Zeta Jones and Sir Sean Connery's performance opposite one another in 1999's Entrapment landed in fifth place.

There was a 39-year age difference between the couple.

Affleck landed inside the top 10 for a second time, with his chemistry with Kate Beckinsdale in Pearl Harbor failing to convince audiences.

Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell's relationship in romantic comedy Four Weddings and A Funeral finished sixth in the list.

The gay romance between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain was more convincing, with only 5% of respondents saying it failed to win them over.

Madonna also featured highly in the poll, with her dramatic relationship with Italian actor Adriano Giannini in Swept Away not managing to draw in viewers.

The pop star made the 2002 film with director husband Guy Richie, with the release proving to be a box office flop.

The title on the BBC website at the time of posting was: "Star Wars duo 'least convincing'" .

If this should be in general section, could you put the thread there?

Personally, I couldn’t stand Elizabeth in any of the Pirates. I don’t know if it was Knightley’s portrayal or the character of Elizabeth itself.

Apparently...but I’d say that those two in the Star Wars prequel were least convincing, period - not just when it came to the on screen romance. For a long anticipated, big name movie it had some atrocious acting (Yoda and Obi Wan being exceptions).

I thought this is about C3PO’s and R2D2’s awkward relationship.

No, it is beneath such serious minds such as ours. But since you were the first to respond, let me tell you. Orlando Bloom has more to worry about than Depp. Even I could have stolen his girl in “Kingdom of Heaven”. Everyone in the theater could tell she wanted me.

The acting was pretty bad.

Agree with you on Yoda's 'acting.'

Sort of pathetic when 'top actor' goes to a computer-generated animation (though Frank Oz did a decent job on the voice).

Ian McDarmid (spelling?) was more convincing as Emperor (even in Episode 3) than he was as Senator and Chancellor.

Of the six Star Wars movies

4 (the original) was the best. Still have two of the promotional iron-ons they gave away when it came out.

1 with Jar Jar sucked

And they were dead on about young A. and the princess. Every time they were together I was wondering “Why does she put up with that punk?”

Romance aside, personally of the opinion that R2-D2 and C-PO demonstrate a fairly good 'complementary relationship,' with bravery and crass spunkiness paired with cowardice and prim and proper decorum.

Have a somewhat similar opinion of the American-British relationship (in that the two cultures and peoples' stereotypes are complementary). .

Pearl Harbor

by Team America

I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you

I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that @#$%^& movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you

Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you

And the article was number one 'most read' article on the BBC website.

This probably should have been put in the general/chat section--agree with you on that, though.

“Oh, Anakin, we mustn’t get involved,” she says.

As she lounges before the fire in a black leather bustier.
