Saturday night's programming was pre-empted for a football game so when I came home after midnight, my local CBS affiliate was showing the programming that was pre-empted. I walked in just as Drew Carey's new game show "Power of 10" was debuting.
I'm something of a game show fan so I decided to watch the first episode to see if I'd like it.
My thoughts on the gameplay are rather unimportant to the sort of questions and dialogue generated by the host.
One polled question was (paraphrasing) "If you were to get into a shooting duel with Dick Cheney, would you win?"
Carey amplifies the question by saying "You know, he's not very well-liked."
There's no expression of shock or horror at the hypothetical of killing the Vice President of the United States. Somehow, I doubt CBS would have chosen that question while Al Gore was Veep.
Now, some might say "You're overreacting. It's just a game show". You could say that until they got to the VERY NEXT QUESTION. In that one, the lead-in talks about Hillary Clinton running for President and how she identifies with the feminist cause. While the polled question wasn't about Hillary, it was hard to miss the message - "Cheney bad, Hillary good".
I think you’re overreacting.
I think so too. Drew Carey is not your typical Hollywood liberal. He’s from Cleveland, and is a former marine. I believe he’s a self-described libertarian. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
For better absortion the shiney side goes to the inside. Wrap tight, but not too tight.
“entertainment” is propaganda in lipstick.
He describes his politics as libertarian, he supports the GOP and is also a self proclaimed "dittohead" and was a vocal supporter of the GOP for years.
But my favorite moment of all, was him taunting copperhead James Carville repeatedly at some DC function, by looking at him and mocking "Gore lost, get over it", several times....if you could read lips, carville's response was not PG.
Interesting - from what I’ve heard, Carey leans to the right politically although he’s pretty flaky.
We have no way of knowing how much control Carey has over the product. The show is obviously taped and who knows what got left on the cutting room floor.
I’m not accusing Carey of liberal bias as much as I am accusing the show itself of being biased. I don’t expect the game show to resemble the Half Hour News Hour. I’m just expecting a game show to be politically neutral, particularly in the season premiere, and it was clearly not.
That's what I gathered from this bit you mentioned:
One polled question was (paraphrasing) "If you were to get into a shooting duel with Dick Cheney, would you win?"Carey amplifies the question by saying "You know, he's not very well-liked."
Cheney's apparently not well liked by the staff either.
