This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

Beaker riding the BIG horse Levi!
New thread over here ping!
WOW! Levi really is a big horse!!! What is he 17 hands?
He’s 17.2. I have to use a step stool to groom him and get a saddle on him. He needs a 52” hunter/jumper girth, the moose, and could easily go with a 54”.
Is it possible fall is coming already? It's cool here today also and two of my pumpkins are orange, half the onions needed to be harvested and I got a ripe watermelon yesterday. Seems pretty early to me.
Hope you all have a great day.
It’s cool here too. I dunno what’s up with this summer.
I don’t mind. If it was hotter, I’d be complaining about that :~)
He is an impressive looking horse.
It is not cool here! Temps today in the high 90's with a heat index of 105. They are predicting 100 to 103 in some parts of Alabama the next few days.
Levi is HUGE! I am only 5'6" and I have very short legs, my mare is just about 16 hh but very skinny, so she doesn't take up much slack in my legs.
We are down at my folks' house on the GA coast -- we brought the dogs but it's 104 degrees here, very humid, the wind is dead calm, and every time the dogs stick their noses outside the deerflies and skeeters just descend on them in a cloud! They are VERY unhappy!
My hubby has to take my son back home tomorrow for school orientation day -- so he will drop the dogs off at our trainers for the rest of the week! They have 40 fenced acres on a high hill with a pond down below, an acre of dog yard with 8' stock fencing, and a nice breeze and no bugs to speak of. The dogs will be MUCH happier there.
Hello.
It’s hot here, but the wind is blowing.
Harley and I had a nice ride.

Hey, nice new thread ya got here!
I saw the link you posted to the extreme cowboy race pics over on the horse.com forum. That hay ring obstacle did look pretty hairy. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it had been just one ring wide because they could’ve pretty much steped over it without stepping on it, but with two it looked like they had to step somewhere in the middle amongst the pipes or on the sheet metal. My main concern about it would be slipping and falling in it and the resulting tangle of pipes and legs that might occur when the horse tried to get up more than them tipping it over. I feed my hay out of rings just like that and to put a new roll in you have to lift them up on edge like that and roll them out of the way so you can place the roll where you want it. Then you have to roll it back and tip it back over so that it circles the roll. It takes everything I’ve got to get it started falling, BUT, once it gets past the break point, that sucker’s coming down, HARD. So if anybody did get tangled up in it I could see where they could easily get a broken leg or back if it fell on them. So I guess it’s really not a great idea to be doing that kinda thing. But you can’t tell some people anything and it apparently got a little bit ugly over on that thread after a while. But it seemed to be more of a case of “You pissed in my Cheerios so I’m gonna piss in yours!” than anything else. Those people are so funny!
Yeah - and I'm right in the middle of it...
Cheap entertainment I guess.
LOL! Frog, you’re too funny! Things always seem to get ugly quickly over there. Everyone has their claws out all the time. It’s too bad. I read for the entertainment value.
It IS entertaining, I’ll give it that. But apparently they want everything to be all sweetness and light on most of those forums or they’re gonna start deleting posts. I got an e-mail just yesterday from the horseshoes.com forum moderator/owner about a similar decision over there. Be nice or get out. I haven’t been over there in quite a while but there did seem to be quite a bit of personal attacks there.
I haven’t been over to horseshoes recently either...
Yeah, you got your horse shoes problem fixed!
I’ve got the farrier coming on Saturday morning around 7am. I personally don’t see how the man stands it, working in heat like we’ve got right now. I trimmed Grace’s feet last night about 6:30 and it was still over 95* and heaven only knows what the humidity level was. I swear I didn’t have a dry thread on after about 2 minutes and I had the high speed fan going full blast. They definately earn their money.
Somebody gave my trainer a big old Palomino who is a nice horse but VERY large, very round, and very forward. He's sort of an oversized Quarter Horse type - big barrel and a big butt, and 17.1 I think. I rode him and everybody laughed at me -- my trainer said, "You look like a peanut up there!" He really is a sweet boy and although he's very strong he came back to me as soon as I asked, but he's just way too big for me. And Gracie and I are just right together - she knows what I'm thinking almost before I think it. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
I took my daughter and a friend who came with her out shopping this afternoon, and it was TOO HOT TO SHOP! You'd open the car door and get hit in the face by a blast of steam! We would have sprinted for the mall doors, but it was too hot to run -- you break a sweat just standing there.
The dogs are well out of this mess!
. . . not a good place for dogs at all!
I think so :~)
I think Cyn is flaring now though, more than she did when Mark was trimming her. Not real sure, I was going to take some new pics to show you and compare to the old, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Please add me to your ping list. TIA!!!!
nuclady
Certainly, and welcome and good morning!
Do you have horses? :~)
Rattlesnakes and gators...100 degree heat with 95% humidity...ticks...mosquitoes big enough to drain you dry...you gotta wonder why people ever decided to settle some places in the deep South! ;o)
(I'm dead serious. There was an article in American Heritage magazine that proposed that theory!)
When my father was young (he grew up in Rome, GA, which is in the foothills of the mountains and quite bearable compared to down here on the GA coast) the entire town cleared out in the summer and went to the mountains. His family had a cottage in Monteagle TN and they just stayed there until fall.
No wonder nothing got done!
We had quite a few thunderstorms yesterday and last night. The rain was sorely needed. Very hot and humid though.
Cool but humid here... I can’t believe I’m actually worried about getting hay for fear of rain... in August.
Hey, I've always thought that! I'd always heard of people moving to the mountains for the summer. I think their reasoning at the time was to get away from the "bad air" that brought on the Malaria. Back then they didn't know that the mosquitoes were what was carrying it.
Classic example which you may enjoy reading (I'm a big Kipling fan, and this is from what I think may be his very best book, Rewards and Fairies): A Doctor of Medicine.
Gators and rattlesnakes? Sounds like not a good place for people, nevermind dogs!
Go ahead and link it... I don’t know exactly what you’re referring to :~)
http://www.aolvideoblog.com/2007/08/08/battle-at-kruger/ Duchess, you may not want to watch.
What’s it about... I’m really quite lost... if it’s gory, I may not want to watch either!
A pride of lions attacks a young buffalo. While working to take down their prey, an alligator attempts to wrestle the kill away from the lions -- a tug of war ensues. And just when that ends, the herd of buffalo return to rescue their own...
Sounds pretty interesting. I'm assuming the buffalo walks away, at least for a while.
Sounds like a lot of drama. I never know who to root for in those things...
Well I was supposed to get hay Monday but it got rained on Monday night so he was not going to squarebale it, instead he round baled it for cattle. It has not rained in over a week and it picked that one night to rain, just my luck!
It is a little gory. If I tell you though, I spoil the ending. Guess you will never know:’)
Ah - cool :~)
That camera sure has a great zoom on it.
That was an easy one for me. I was rooting for the baby.
Well yeah, but the lions have babies at home too.
That’s a nice zoom you have!
And that wasn’t even full zoom either. But as it was I still had to get out a folding ladder and rest it on one of the treads to get it to focus. I took about half a dozen shots first, trying everything from holding my breath to holding it against the porch post to keep from shaking it before I settled on the ladder. It was kinda fun though.
I missed another really cool picture on my way home too. I was about to drive onto O’Neal bridge, there at McFarland Park, when I noticed that the Mississippi Queen riverboat was about to go by. I LOVE watching those things! They had the Caliope going full blast too. I could even hear it inside the car with the windows rolled up. So here I am, scrambling in my purse for a camera while driving across a bridge. I got it out, rolled down the window and was trying to look at the viewfinder without side-swiping either the bridge railing or another car beside me. But I never could get a decent shot off because of all the bridge girders whizzing by. :-{ Pissed me off Royally! What I should’ve done was to whip into the parking lot of the railroad bridge and run to the end of it. I almost turned around and did that, but that thing is LONG and I didn’t figure I’d make it before the riverboat got into the barge channel leading to the dam.
Back before 9/11 you could actually go out onto the dam and watch them lock through. That was really fun because they played the Caliope throughout the whole lockage and all the passengers would come out onto the balconies and watch and wave and the dam was usually full of people who stopped to watch it go by. Those were the good old days. They’ve got all the dams locked up tighter’n Fort Knox now. You can’t even get onto the property, much less out onto the dam itself. :-(

The only difference would have been the fact that she had her stacks folded down at the time, in order to fit under the bridge. That's pretty cool to watch happen too.
Woah! That’s awesome!
