10,000 isn’t that much to brag about. For most people it would allow them to pay off most of their bills. Nothing to imagine a lap of luxury.
Might be different if you’re flashing around your winnings in cash.

Even if he wasn’t “bragging” about it, seems like the kind of thing one might mention at work.
Thing is, this guy was probably giving this illegal(?) convicted criminal a big break by hiring him on his crew.
